Dragon Age Co-Creator Advises EA to Emulate Larian
Former BioWare developers have criticized EA's assessment of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's underperformance and subsequent restructuring of BioWare. EA CEO Andrew Wilson attributed the game's failure to not resonate with a broad enough audience, suggesting the need for "shared-world features and deeper engagement." This followed layoffs and a restructuring that shifted BioWare's focus solely to Mass Effect 5.
Reports highlight the tumultuous development of Dreadwolf, including multiple development reboots and the departure of key personnel. While EA claimed 1.5 million players engaged with the game, this fell significantly short of projections. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported that BioWare staff considered the game's completion a miracle given EA's initial push for live-service elements, later reversed.
Wilson's comments prompted reactions from former BioWare figures. David Gaider, former narrative lead on Dragon Age, argued that EA's takeaway – that the game should have been live-service – is short-sighted. He suggested EA should learn from Larian Studios' success with Baldur's Gate 3, focusing on the core strengths that made Dragon Age popular in the past.
Mike Laidlaw, former creative director on Dragon Age, expressed stronger disapproval, stating he would resign if pressured to transform a beloved single-player IP into a purely multiplayer experience. He highlighted the inherent conflict between the core appeal of the Dragon Age franchise and a forced shift to a multiplayer model.
The outcome suggests the future of Dragon Age is uncertain, with BioWare now concentrating its resources on Mass Effect 5. EA's CFO, Stuart Canfield, acknowledged the changing industry landscape and justified the resource reallocation to focus on high-potential projects. The significant downsizing of BioWare, from approximately 200 employees to fewer than 100, underscores the impact of Dreadwolf's underperformance on the studio.
