Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom's Interview With Series' First Female Director

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom ushers in a new era for the franchise, marking the debut of its first female director, Tomomi Sano. This article delves into Sano's journey and the game's unique development path.
Tomomi Sano: A Zelda Pioneer
Echoes of Wisdom holds a significant place in Zelda history. It's not only the first game to feature Princess Zelda as the playable protagonist but also the first helmed by a female director. Sano, in a Nintendo interview, shared her experience transitioning from supporting roles in previous Zelda remakes (Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D, Link's Awakening, and Twilight Princess HD) and Mario & Luigi titles to leading this project. Her contributions involved overseeing production, suggesting improvements, and ensuring the gameplay aligned with the established Zelda style. Series producer Eiji Aonuma highlighted Sano's consistent involvement in Grezzo's Zelda remake projects. With a career spanning over two decades, starting with Tekken 3 in 1998, Sano's expertise extends across various Nintendo franchises, including Mario sports games.
From Dungeon Maker to Epic Adventure
Aonuma revealed that Echoes of Wisdom's origins lie in a post-Link's Awakening initiative. Grezzo, leveraging their top-down Zelda expertise, initially proposed a new remake. However, they presented a more innovative concept: a Zelda dungeon maker. Several prototypes were explored, including one with a "copy-and-paste" mechanic and another blending top-down and side-view perspectives. Grezzo's Satoshi Terada detailed an "edit dungeon" concept where players could construct their own Zelda experiences.
The project underwent a significant shift when Aonuma intervened, redirecting the focus. While appreciating the initial ideas, he envisioned greater potential by using the copied items as tools within pre-designed dungeons, rather than for complete creation.
Sano explained how this impacted gameplay, citing the example of the Thwomp enemy. Initially, concerns arose about potential exploits, but the team ultimately removed restrictions, encouraging creative problem-solving. A guiding principle emerged: "being mischievous." This philosophy, documented by the team, emphasized unconventional gameplay approaches.
Aonuma compared this approach to the Myahm Agana Shrine in Breath of the Wild, highlighting the joy of unexpected solutions. The developers embraced the element of surprise and unconventional strategies.
Echoes of Wisdom, launching September 26th on Nintendo Switch, presents an alternate Zelda timeline where she embarks on a rescue mission amidst rifts tearing through Hyrule.
