Doom's Combat Riffs with Modern Metal

Doom's enduring legacy is inextricably linked to its metal soundtrack. The series' iconic imagery of fire, skulls, and demonic entities mirrors the aesthetic of bands like Iron Maiden. This synergy between Doom's gameplay and its musical backdrop has evolved over three decades, mirroring the evolution of metal subgenres. From thrash metal roots, Doom's sound has traversed various styles, culminating in the metalcore intensity of Doom: The Dark Ages.

The original 1993 Doom drew inspiration from late 80s and early 90s metal giants like Pantera and Alice in Chains, a clear influence heard in tracks like "Untitled." The overall soundtrack borrowed from thrash metal, evoking the energy of Metallica and Anthrax, perfectly complementing the game's fast-paced action. Bobby Prince's score remains a timeless classic, perfectly synchronized with the game's iconic gunplay.

Doom's musical direction shifted with the 2004 release of Doom 3. This survival horror installment necessitated a different sonic approach. While Trent Reznor's involvement was initially considered, Chris Vrenna and Clint Walsh ultimately composed the soundtrack, drawing inspiration from Tool's atmospheric and progressive metal style. Doom 3's main theme resonates with the experimental soundscapes of Tool's Lateralus, fitting the game's slower, more deliberate pace.

Following Doom 3, the series underwent a period of development challenges. The 2016 reboot, however, marked a triumphant return to form, embracing the fast-paced energy of the original. Mick Gordon's score for Doom 2016 is a djent masterpiece, characterized by its heavy sub-bass and white noise, creating a visceral listening experience. Its success arguably surpasses the original soundtrack, becoming synonymous with the game itself.

Doom Eternal (2020), while also composed largely by Gordon, faced production complexities, resulting in a soundtrack that, while bearing his signature style, leans more towards metalcore, reflecting the prevailing trends of the late 2010s and early 2020s. The influence of bands like Bring Me the Horizon and Architects is evident, particularly in the incorporation of crushing breakdowns and electronic elements. While still heavy, it presents a slightly lighter feel compared to Doom 2016, mirroring the game's inclusion of platforming and puzzle elements.

Doom: The Dark Ages presents a unique opportunity. Initial gameplay reveals suggest a slower pace than Eternal, emphasizing close-quarters combat with a shield. The soundtrack, composed by Finishing Move, appears to draw from both classic and modern metal influences. The showcased tracks hint at the seismic intensity of Knocked Loose, combined with thrash elements reminiscent of the original Doom, creating a soundtrack that matches the game's blend of brutal close-quarters combat and large-scale encounters.

The Dark Ages' gameplay, incorporating giant mechs and mythological creatures, expands upon the original Doom's formula. This evolution parallels the experimentation within modern metal, incorporating elements from electronic, hip-hop, or even reggaeton influences. The combination of intense combat and a dynamic soundtrack promises a thrilling experience, potentially establishing a new benchmark for the series and its musical accompaniment. The anticipation for Doom: The Dark Ages' full soundtrack is high, with the potential for a new iconic metal score to emerge.
