Marathon Release Date Unveiled at Gameplay Showcase

Bungie, the renowned developer behind Destiny and Halo, has officially announced the release date for their upcoming first-person extraction shooter, Marathon, during its gameplay reveal showcase. Dive in to discover more about what the game has in store and how you can participate in the Marathon Closed Alpha Playtest.
Marathon Coming on September 23
Returning to Tau Ceti

On April 13, Bungie unveiled the gameplay for Marathon, setting the stage for a thrilling multiplayer experience. In this new iteration, players will form teams of three, competing against other teams and AI-controlled enemies to secure valuable loot and successfully extract it from the game environment. This marks a significant shift from the original Marathon trilogy, which was released between 1994 and 1996 and focused on single-player, story-driven gameplay.

In a detailed PlayStation.blog post dated April 12, Bungie shared insights into the new direction of Marathon. Despite the move towards multiplayer, Narrative Leader Jonathan Goff emphasized maintaining the experiential storytelling that has defined Bungie's games. He highlighted, "The interweaving of narratives, events, and characters in the original trilogy delivered a world of discovery, wonder, and misdirection." Goff further elaborated, "Our goal with Marathon is not just to tell a story, but to build worlds where stories naturally unfold."
Making Marathon a "Story Engine"

During the reveal stream, fans observed a strong focus on in-game economy, with each item in a player's inventory tagged with a sell price and clear indications of what can be extracted. However, Bungie clarified that accumulating wealth is not the sole objective. The developers aim for Marathon to function as a "story engine," where memorable experiences and stories emerge even from failures or missions where players leave with nothing.
Game Director Joe Ziegler, in a recent interview with PC Gamer, discussed this vision, stating, "What we're trying to do is say, 'how do you go on adventures and then feel that survival challenge, that survival story that you're making?' Some of the best survival stories and moments I've had in gaming are actually failures or weird things that have happened, right?" Ziegler emphasized that success in Marathon isn't just about surviving, but about crafting a compelling story from each run.
Working With Fans and Creators

Bungie has actively engaged with fans and content creators throughout Marathon's development, even from the game's early stages. Early prototypes were playtested by fans, leading to valuable feedback that shaped the game's design. A key concern was the unpredictability and unfairness of maps, where players could camp spawns or find their targeted loot already taken.
In response, Ziegler explained, "After hearing this feedback, we moved to the design we have today, where each match is a fresh start for everyone. This consistent starting point means you and your teammates can better strategize before each run, and then you can race enemy teams to fight for the loot you’re looking for."
Marathon Closed Alpha Playtest

Starting on April 23 and running until May 4, Bungie will host a closed alpha playtest for Marathon, limited to participants from the U.S. and Canada. Players will have the opportunity to experience four different Runners: Blackbird, similar to Destiny 2’s Warlock; Void, with tactical invisibility; Locus, equipped with a tactical shield; and Glitch, known for its exceptional mobility. The alpha will include three distinct maps: Perimeter, a woodland setting for five crews (15 players), and Dire Marsh, a more open environment for six crews (18 players).

To join the alpha playtest, interested players should visit the official Marathon Discord server, navigate to the alpha-access channel, and enter the "/alpha" command. Keep in mind that participation is not guaranteed as this is a closed alpha and the first public testing phase for the game.
No further playtest announcements have been made for regions beyond the U.S. and Canada. Marathon is slated for release on September 23, 2025, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates and details by checking our latest articles!
