The Last of Us Creator Admits Lack of 'Confidence' for Sequels

At the DICE Summit in Las Vegas, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann and Sony Santa Monica's Cory Barlog discussed the pervasive theme of doubt in game development. Their hour-long conversation covered personal insecurities, creative processes, and the challenges of sequels.

One audience question focused on character development across multiple games. Druckmann surprisingly revealed he doesn't plan sequels beforehand: "I never think about multiple games," he stated. He focuses intensely on the current project, treating each game as potentially his last. Any sequel ideas are incorporated organically, rather than saved for future installments. He approaches sequels by examining unresolved elements and character arcs from previous games, even suggesting that if a character's journey is complete, "I think we'll just kill them off." He cited the Uncharted series as an example, emphasizing how each sequel's direction emerged organically from reflecting on the previous game.

Barlog, in contrast, described a meticulously planned, interconnected approach, likening his process to a complex conspiracy board. He enjoys connecting current projects to ideas conceived years earlier, but acknowledged the significant stress and potential for conflict this method entails. The shifting teams and evolving perspectives over time can significantly impact the feasibility of long-term plans.

Druckmann admitted he lacks the confidence to plan so far ahead, preferring to focus on the immediate tasks. He emphasized his passion for game development, echoing Pedro Pascal's sentiment that creating art is the reason he wakes up each morning. Despite the stress, negativity, and even death threats, the joy of game creation, and collaborating with talented individuals, outweighs the challenges.

The conversation shifted to the question of when it's enough. Barlog poignantly described the relentless drive of creative obsession, where achieving a goal only reveals another, taller mountain to climb. The internal compulsion to continue, despite advice to slow down, is a powerful force.

Druckmann shared a similar perspective, but with a more measured approach. He mentioned his intention to gradually lessen his involvement in day-to-day operations, creating opportunities for others to rise. He sees his eventual departure as creating space for new talent and fresh perspectives. Barlog, playfully responding to Druckmann's comments, jokingly declared his intention to retire.
