Kojima to Direct Film After Finishing PlayStation Game Physint in 5-6 Years
Hideo Kojima's eagerly anticipated spiritual successor to Metal Gear, Physint, is still a considerable time away from its release, with an estimated timeline of "another five or six years" according to the visionary creator himself. In a recent conversation with Le Film Francais, Kojima disclosed that his ambitions to delve into directing a movie are on pause until he completes this new "action espionage" game, marking his first major project of this genre since his well-publicized departure from Konami in 2015.
Kojima has not been short of opportunities since founding his independent studio, as he mentioned receiving numerous offers to develop games. Currently, alongside Physint, his studio is actively working on Death Stranding 2, set for release on June 26. The multi-talented director expressed his long-held desire to pay homage to cinema, hinting at a potential film project after completing Physint. "I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!" he stated.
Physint was first announced by PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst in January 2024. While details have been scarce since, Kojima initially suggested it might also be a movie, but later clarified on X/Twitter that the project would push the boundaries of 'Digital Entertainment' with its cinematic elements.
In addition to Physint and Death Stranding 2, Kojima Productions is also developing OD, a new IP in partnership with Xbox Game Studios, featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Kojima is further expanding the Death Stranding universe with A24's film adaptation, where actor Norman Reedus, the franchise's star, confirmed he would reprise his role in the movie.
Kojima's creativity extends beyond these projects. He recently shared insights into discarded game concepts, including a unique idea for a 'Forgetting Game', where the protagonist loses memories and abilities if the player takes extended breaks. Moreover, in a thoughtful gesture to the future of his studio, Kojima revealed he left his team a USB stick filled with game ideas to be explored after his passing.
