Don't Wait For Fable, Play Fable 2 Instead

Buried deep within this week's Xbox Podcast was exciting news about Playground Games' highly anticipated Fable. While a rare glimpse of gameplay was revealed, it came with the disheartening news of a delay. Initially slated for release this year, Fable is now set for 2026.

Delays, while frustrating, aren't always a death knell. Hopefully, this extra time will allow Fable's richly detailed world to fully flourish. But this extra year offers a perfect opportunity: play the Fable games, especially Fable 2, the series' undisputed peak. Rediscover this unique 2008 RPG from Lionhead Studios.

PlayBy today's RPG standards, Fable 2 is remarkably unusual. Even compared to its 2008 contemporaries like Fallout 3 and early BioWare 3D titles, its vision is singular. While it features a traditional campaign structure with a linear story and side quests, its RPG systems are far simpler than those found in Oblivion or Neverwinter Nights. This simplicity makes it incredibly approachable, even for RPG newcomers.

Only six main skills govern health, strength, and speed. Weapon damage is the sole stat to consider, with no equivalent for armor or accessories. Combat, while frequent, is lighthearted swashbuckling, enhanced by creative spellcasting (like the hilarious Chaos spell). Death itself is inconsequential, resulting in only a minor XP penalty.

Fable 2 is the perfect entry point for RPG newcomers. In 2008, Oblivion's vast world could feel overwhelming. Fable 2's Albion, however, offered manageable, interconnected maps. You can freely explore, aided by your canine companion, uncovering secrets like buried treasure and hidden caves. This creates a sense of scale beyond the game's actual size. Albion's geography is somewhat restrictive, guiding you along linear paths. It's not a world designed for getting truly lost, but for experiencing a vibrant, bustling society.

Albion pales in comparison to the sprawling worlds of BioWare's Infinity Engine games or Morrowind, but judging it by modern standards misses the point. Fable 2 prioritizes a living, breathing world. Consider it akin to The Sims—a remarkable simulation of society.

Albion functions like a complex, organic clockwork mechanism. Citizens wake, work, and sleep, with town criers announcing daily events. Each NPC has a unique personality and reacts to your actions. Through a diverse range of gestures, you can charm, insult, or even seduce them. A well-timed fart might send a pub into fits of laughter, while mocking children could lead to parental intervention. Fable 2 masterfully creates a reactive world and truly alive NPCs.

While your character is a destined hero, Fable 2 is more engaging when you immerse yourself in its society. You can buy and manage properties, work various jobs (woodcutting and blacksmithing offer surprisingly soothing minigames), and even start a family. These individual elements feel artificial, yet the overall effect is remarkably lifelike.

A well-executed fart might send a pub into fits of laughter.Few RPGs have replicated this aspect. Even Baldur's Gate 3 lacks the organic romances and property market manipulation. However, Red Dead Redemption 2 offers a similar experience. Rockstar's detailed world features reactive NPCs who remember your actions. Your behavior influences their reactions, creating a memorable and impactful experience. If Playground's Fable aims to stay true to its roots, Red Dead Redemption 2 should serve as a modern touchstone.

Playground Games must also retain Fable's unique elements. The dry British humor, witty satire, and a memorable cast of characters are crucial. But perhaps most important is Lionhead's approach to good and evil.

Lionhead founder Peter Molyneux has a fascination with good and evil, evident in Black & White and his future projects. However, Fable 2's approach differs from the nuanced choices in The Witcher or BioWare games. Fable 2 embraces comedic extremes—choices are starkly angelic or demonic. An early quest tasks you with either ridding a warehouse of pests or destroying its contents. Later, you must choose between tormenting or marrying a heartbroken ghost's former lover.

Modern RPGs prioritize complex player expression, exploring the spectrum of human behavior. Moral dilemmas are intricate. Fable, however, thrives on the binary. It allows you to become the most heroic hero or the most villainous villain. This binary approach is best seen in Fable 2, where quests offer clear good and evil paths. The reactive world further shapes your reputation. Moral choices often feel underwhelming due to their focus on the middle ground, but Fable 2 allows for full-fledged villainy, and it works because of its simple binary system.

PlayIt remains uncertain whether Playground Games will capture this essence. The recent gameplay footage offered a glimpse of a more detailed world, with fewer restrictions than previous titles. The dense city showcased in the trailer hints at a vibrant, Sims-like society.

This vision is still a year away. In the meantime, revisit Fable 2. Its unique qualities highlight the importance of Playground Games preserving Fable's distinct identity. We don't need a Witcher clone or a Baldur's Gate imitation; we need Fable to be Fable, quirks and all.
