Capcom, Kamiya, Machine Head Tease 'Ōkami 2' Details
Twenty years after the original Ōkami's release, Amaterasu, the sun goddess and benevolent mother figure, makes a surprising return in a highly anticipated sequel.
Announced at The Game Awards, this new Ōkami adventure is under development, helmed by Hideki Kamiya, recently departed from PlatinumGames and now leading his own studio, Clovers. Capcom, the IP owner, acts as publisher, with support from Machine Head Works, a studio comprised of Capcom veterans, who previously worked on the Ōkami HD remake. The team boasts a stellar lineup of both seasoned Ōkami developers and fresh talent.
While initial details were scarce, IGN secured a revealing interview with Kamiya, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata in Osaka, Japan. The discussion covered the sequel's genesis, the collaboration between studios, and the unique vision driving the project.

IGN's Interview Highlights:
Kamiya's departure from PlatinumGames stemmed from a creative divergence. He aims to create games uniquely his own, emphasizing the creator's personality as integral to the player experience. He defines his games not by a specific formula, but by their unique and unforgettable player experience.
Clovers' name is a nod to Kamiya's time at Clover Studio, Capcom's fourth development division, represented by the four-leaf clover—a symbol of creativity.
The sequel's conception involved Capcom's long-held desire for an Ōkami continuation, fueled by the game's enduring popularity and a desire to complete the original's unfinished narrative. Kamiya's departure created the opportune moment to initiate the project.
Machine Head Works acts as a bridge between Clovers and Capcom, leveraging its experience with Capcom's RE Engine and the original Ōkami team members. The RE Engine's capabilities are crucial to realizing Kamiya's artistic vision, though specifics remain undisclosed.
Capcom's continued interest in Ōkami stems from its loyal fanbase and consistent sales, defying typical game sales decline patterns. The positive fan response to the Game Awards announcement further solidified the decision.
The team aims to surpass the original Ōkami's achievements, building upon its strengths while incorporating modern game development advancements. They acknowledge the potential challenges of updating controls for a modern audience while respecting the preferences of original fans.
The sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's story, featuring Amaterasu. While Ōkamiden exists, the sequel focuses on a direct continuation of the original game's narrative.
The early announcement at the Game Awards aimed to express the team's excitement and commitment to the project. They acknowledge potential fan anticipation and assure dedication to delivering a high-quality game.
The team draws inspiration from various sources, including Takarazuka stage shows (Kamiya), Gekidan Shiki theatre (Sakata), and the Gundam GQuuuuuuX movie (Hirabayashi).
Success is defined by creating a game that both the creators and fans enjoy, exceeding expectations and creating a memorable experience for players of all skill levels.
The future of Clovers and Machine Head Works involves continued collaboration with Capcom, while also aiming to develop their own unique IPs.

The team concluded by expressing gratitude to fans for their support and enthusiasm, promising to deliver a sequel worthy of the Ōkami legacy.
