Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Issues Update on Rare’s Long in Development Everwild
Rare's Everwild: Still in Development, Says Xbox Boss
Over five years after its initial announcement at Microsoft's X019 event, the fate of Rare's Everwild remains a topic of much speculation. The game's absence from subsequent Xbox showcases and swirling reboot rumors have fueled uncertainty. However, Xbox head Phil Spencer has confirmed the project is ongoing.
In a recent interview with XboxEra, Spencer expressed his enthusiasm for Everwild, highlighting a recent visit to Rare's UK studio to assess the game's progress. He mentioned Everwild alongside other anticipated titles, emphasizing the time afforded to developers despite Microsoft's busy release schedule, significantly boosted by the acquisitions of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard.
Spencer's comments emphasize Microsoft's commitment to providing developers ample time for development. This is further underscored by his mention of upcoming visits to other studios, such as Coalition (Gears of War).
Everwild's development has faced challenges, including a denied reboot rumor and the departure of creative director Simon Woodroffe in 2020. The studio has since appointed Gregg Mayles, a veteran designer with a history on titles such as Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Pinata, and Sea of Thieves.
While initially described as a third-person adventure game with god game elements, the game's prolonged development suggests potential alterations to its core design. The last trailer, from July 2020, simply described Everwild as "a brand new IP from Rare. A unique and unforgettable experience awaits in a natural and magical world."
Microsoft's extensive portfolio of in-development games includes titles like the Perfect Dark reboot, the next Halo installment, and Playground's new Fable game, alongside Bethesda's Elder Scrolls 6 and Activision's annual Call of Duty release. This contrasts with the extended development time given to Everwild and other titles.
Despite the delays and speculation, Spencer's statement offers reassurance to fans eagerly awaiting the release of Rare's ambitious project.
