"Marvel Gaming Universe" Concept to Link All Games Like MCU Falls Through Due to Lack of Funding
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has undeniably reshaped the landscape of entertainment, weaving an intricate tapestry of interconnected films and series that share a unified narrative thread. Yet, when it comes to video games, Marvel's offerings remain isolated islands, each with its own storylines untethered from one another. For instance, Insomniac’s Spider-Man series stands apart from Eidos-Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and upcoming titles like Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, Wolverine, and Blade exist in their own standalone universes.
There was once a vision at Disney to bridge this divide and establish a Marvel Gaming Universe (MGU), mirroring the success of the MCU in film and television. But what ultimately became of this ambitious project?

On The Fourth Curtain podcast, host Alexander Seropian and guest Alex Irvine revisited this abandoned MGU concept, sharing insights into why it never materialized.
Seropian, co-founder of Bungie (the studio behind Halo and Destiny) and former head of Disney’s video game division until 2012, recalled the initiative. Irvine, who crafted the lore for popular titles like Marvel Rivals, detailed his involvement in the project.
“When I first joined Marvel games, there was talk of creating a shared gaming universe akin to the MCU,” Irvine stated. “Unfortunately, it never took off.”
Seropian confirmed that the MGU was his brainchild but faced resistance from Disney executives.
“It was my idea—‘Let’s unify these games,’” Seropian explained. “This was before the MCU gained traction. However, it lacked sufficient backing.”
Drawing from his background in ARGs (I Love Bees), Irvine outlined the proposed structure of the MGU.
“We envisioned a central hub connecting all games,” he said. “Players could traverse between titles, incorporating comics, new content, and more. Unfortunately, it never moved past the planning stage.”
Why did Disney abandon the MGU concept? According to Irvine, the complexity of maintaining consistency stymied progress.
“Back then, we debated how the MGU would differ from comics or movies,” Irvine noted. “Some at Disney grew wary of managing such intricacies.”
It’s fascinating to ponder what could have been. Imagine a world where Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy shared a universe, with crossovers or a grand finale akin to the MCU’s Avengers: Endgame. As for Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine game, will it join forces with Spider-Man? Could Spider-Man appear in Wolverine?
Though the MGU remains a missed opportunity, perhaps in another dimension, it exists as a thriving reality.
