Leaked Internal Sony Video Uses Horizon's Aloy to Show AI-Powered PlayStation Character Prototype

A leaked internal Sony video reveals ongoing experimentation with AI-powered PlayStation characters. The Verge reported on this video, allegedly from PlayStation Studios' advanced technology group, showcasing Aloy from the *Horizon* games as an AI-driven character. The video's subsequent removal from YouTube following a copyright claim from Muso (a company listing Sony Interactive Entertainment as a client) lends credence to its authenticity. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment.

The video, as detailed by The Verge, features Sony Interactive Entertainment's director of software engineering, Sharwin Raghoebardajal, engaging in a conversation with an AI-powered Aloy. This interaction utilizes OpenAI's Whisper for speech-to-text, GPT-4 and Llama 3 for dialogue and decision-making, Sony's Emotional Voice Synthesis (EVS) for speech generation, and Sony's Mockingbird technology for facial animation.

The conversation reveals a robotic voice, distinct from voice actor Ashly Burch's portrayal, and stiff facial animations. When asked about her search for her mother, AI Aloy responds with plot points from the game, including her discovery of being a clone of Dr. Elizabeth Sobeck. The demo then shifts to *Horizon Forbidden West*'s game world, showcasing a jarring interaction between Raghoebardajal and the in-game Aloy he controls. The irony of using Aloy, given the *Horizon* storyline, is readily apparent.

The demo, a prototype developed with Guerrilla Games, serves as an internal demonstration of the technology. While showcasing Sony's investment in AI-powered characters, the company hasn't confirmed plans for public integration, nor is its feasibility with current PS5 games assured. However, this aligns with industry trends, as competitors like Microsoft (with its Muse AI) are also heavily invested in AI game development.

Generative AI's role in gaming is a hot topic, particularly given recent industry layoffs. It faces criticism regarding ethical and rights issues, as well as its struggles to produce consistently enjoyable content. Keywords Studios' failed attempt at an entirely AI-generated game underscores these challenges. Despite this, companies like EA and Capcom are actively exploring generative AI's potential, highlighting its growing importance.

Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions and Head of Product at PlayStation Studios, emphasized the importance of AI in gaming for Gen Z and Gen Alpha, citing the desire for personalized experiences. Recent use of generative AI in *Call of Duty: Black Ops 6*, albeit met with some backlash, further illustrates its presence in the industry.
