EA Announces Next Battlefield Game for Fiscal Year 2026
Electronic Arts (EA) has officially announced that the next installment in the acclaimed Battlefield series is slated for release within their fiscal year 2026, spanning from April 2025 to March 2026. This eagerly awaited game promises a return to form, aiming to recapture the essence of what made earlier entries like Battlefield 3 and 4 iconic in the hearts of fans.
EA shared this news alongside its financial results for the third quarter of the current fiscal year, ending March 2025. In a move to engage the community early and enhance the development process, EA has introduced Battlefield Labs. This innovative initiative will invite players to participate in testing phases, offering crucial feedback on gameplay elements from pre-alpha stages through to the final product. The brief teaser of pre-alpha gameplay footage has sparked excitement and anticipation among fans.
Under the banner of Battlefield Studios, four dedicated studios are collaborating on this project. DICE in Stockholm is focusing on multiplayer components, while Motive, known for the Dead Space remake and Star Wars: Squadrons, is handling both single-player missions and additional multiplayer maps. Ripple Effect, previously known as DICE LA, is tasked with attracting new players to the franchise, and Criterion, which has shifted its focus from Need For Speed, is developing the single-player campaign.
EA emphasized that the development teams are entering a crucial phase, where player input will be vital in shaping the game. Through Battlefield Labs, testers will have the opportunity to influence core aspects of the game, including combat mechanics, destruction features, weapon and vehicle balance, and the integration of these elements into maps, modes, and squad play. Classic modes like Conquest and Breakthrough will be tested, alongside explorations into new ideas and refinements to the class system, aiming to enhance strategic gameplay.
The game is set to return to a modern setting, a move seen as a strategic pivot after the mixed reception to Battlefield 2042, which experimented with a futuristic setting and the introduction of Specialists. The next Battlefield will focus on 64-player maps, moving away from the larger, less popular 128-player setups of its predecessor. Furthermore, the controversial Specialists feature will be absent, marking a return to traditional class-based gameplay.
Concept art released in September hinted at exciting new features, including ship-to-ship and helicopter combat, alongside dynamic events like natural disasters. Vince Zampella, head of Respawn and Group GM for EA Studios Organization, has expressed a strong desire to reconnect with the core fanbase, acknowledging the nostalgia for the series' heyday during the Battlefield 3 and 4 era.
Despite the closure of Ridgeline Games, which was developing a standalone single-player Battlefield game, EA's commitment to the franchise remains unwavering. CEO Andrew Wilson described the upcoming title as one of the "most ambitious projects" in EA's history, signaling a significant investment in revitalizing the Battlefield brand.
As EA continues to refine this next chapter of Battlefield, the company has yet to disclose the final title or the platforms on which it will launch. However, with such a dedicated effort from multiple studios and a clear focus on community engagement through Battlefield Labs, the next Battlefield game is poised to make a strong return to the forefront of the gaming world.
