Bloodborne PSX Demake Hit With Copyright Claim, Unleashing 'Copium' Remake Theory
Sony's copyright claims against Bloodborne fan projects are escalating. Following a DMCA takedown of the popular Bloodborne 60fps mod last week, Lilith Walther's Bloodborne PSX demake has now been targeted. A YouTube video showcasing the demake received a copyright claim from MarkScan Enforcement, a company reportedly hired by Sony Interactive Entertainment – the same company responsible for the mod takedown.
Lance McDonald, creator of the 60fps mod, expressed bewilderment at Sony's actions, questioning the reasoning behind the aggressive pursuit of fan projects. The timing coincides with recent breakthroughs in PS4 emulation, allowing for near-remaster quality gameplay at 60fps on PC. This has fueled speculation that Sony's actions are preemptive, clearing the way for an official 60fps remake or remaster. McDonald's "copium theory" suggests Sony is aiming to avoid search result conflicts between fan projects and any potential official releases.
The situation highlights the ongoing frustration surrounding Bloodborne's lack of official support on newer platforms. Despite widespread fan demand for a next-gen patch, remaster, or sequel, Sony has remained silent. Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered a personal theory, suggesting that Hidetaka Miyazaki's strong attachment to the game and desire for creative control prevents any official updates or remakes, a sentiment respected by the PlayStation team.
While Miyazaki has acknowledged Bloodborne's suitability for modern hardware, he often deflects questions about its future, emphasizing that FromSoftware doesn't own the IP. Despite Sony's actions, there's currently no official confirmation of any plans to revive Bloodborne. The game remains dormant, a source of both fascination and frustration for its dedicated fanbase nearly a decade after its release. The image below shows the Bloodborne PSX demake.
