Secret Star Wars Cut Premieres in London
Think you've watched the 1977 version of Star Wars? Chances are you've actually seen one of the modified editions released after the original theatrical run - revisions personally tweaked by George Lucas that eventually formed the "special editions" of this iconic space opera. But here's exciting news for purists: some fans may finally get to witness the authentic, unaltered version Lucas originally created decades ago.
This June, the British Film Institute will launch its Film on Film Festival by screening one of the few surviving Technicolor prints from Star Wars' debut theatrical release, as reported by The Telegraph. This marks the first public showing of this specific print since December 1978, though it previously appeared in limited VHS releases.
Lucas began modifying the film with its 1981 theatrical re-release, and since then, Lucasfilm has only authorized screenings of various "special edition" versions. The print being featured at the festival promises to be particularly special - carefully preserved at -5°C (23°F) for four decades to maintain optimal quality, ensuring what should be an exceptionally pristine viewing experience.
Historically, Lucas has remained firm in his opposition to screening his original cut (now known as Episode IV: A New Hope), frequently defending this position over the years.
"The Special Edition represents my true vision," Lucas told the Associated Press in 2004 regarding his decision not to restore or re-release the original. "The earlier version is available on VHS if people want it. I won't invest millions restoring something I don't consider authentic anymore. It's like having people fall in love with an unfinished painting when the complete work exists."
The filmmaker added, "I'd rather face criticism for the version I stand behind than compromise on what I consider incomplete work."
While Lucas's apparent shift in stance regarding this screening remains unexplained, devoted Star Wars enthusiasts undoubtedly welcome this rare opportunity to experience cinema history in its purest form.
