Balatro Dev Avoided Roguelike Tropes, Except Slay the Spire

Local Thunk, creator of Balatro, recently published an extensive development retrospective revealing unconventional approaches to designing the hit deck-building roguelike. Most surprisingly, the developer intentionally avoided playing other roguelikes during production - with a single notable exception.
An Intentional Design Blind Spot
In his detailed blog post, the developer explained his unusual December 2021 decision to stop playing roguelike games entirely during development:
"This wasn't about creating a better game - game design is my passion, not a business venture. I wanted the joy of exploring roguelike mechanics freely, making mistakes, and reinventing systems rather than borrowing established formulas. While this approach might have resulted in less polished mechanics, it preserved the creative spontaneity I love about game development."
However, the developer eventually broke this rule when encountering technical challenges with controller implementation in mid-2023, downloading Slay the Spire as reference material: "Holy shit," he recalled writing, "now that is a game." He credits his late exposure for preventing unintentional imitation of its brilliant design.
Development Secrets Revealed
The post uncovered numerous behind-the-scenes details about Balatro's unconventional journey:
- The project folder remained named simply "CardGame" throughout development
- The working title was "Joker Poker" for most of production
- The final Joker count expanded from 120 to 150 due to a humorous meeting miscommunication
Scrapped Mechanics & Naming Origins
Local Thunk detailed several abandoned systems including:
- A Super Auto Pets-style permanent card upgrade system
- Separate reroll currency
- 'Golden seal' cards that return to hand when all blinds are skipped
The developer also explained his pseudonym's origins as a programming joke involving Lua variables and his partner's unconventional naming preferences.
The full development retrospective offers fascinating insights into Balatro's creation. As IGN noted in our 9/10 review, this inventive deck-builder creates "the sort of fun that threatens to derail whole weekend plans as you stay awake far too late staring into the eyes of a jester tempting you in for just one more run."
