Jump Ship Preview: It's Sea of Thieves Meets Left 4 Dead, and it's Even More Polished and Fun Than Last Year

It was almost exactly one year ago that I walked into a meeting during the Game Developer’s Conference and first got introduced to Jump Ship, a four-player sci-fi PvE shooter that skillfully blends elements from Sea of Thieves, Left 4 Dead, and FTL into a uniquely captivating experience. Having recently played the latest build alongside some of the developers, I am convinced that if any indie game is poised to make a significant impact in this already packed year of releases, Jump Ship is a top contender. As it gears up for an Early Access launch this summer, the game is more refined and enjoyable than ever.
For those unfamiliar with Jump Ship, it's a non-grindy space adventure designed for up to four players. Notably, the team at Keepsake Games has taken player feedback seriously and is developing innovative ways for solo players to enjoy the game. This includes narratively crafted AI assistants that help manage the ship, allowing solo players to immerse themselves fully in the experience. You can get a sense of this in the Prologue, which not only serves as a tutorial introducing key gameplay mechanics like shooting, space suit flying, and ship combat, but also enriches the game's lore.

Jump Ship now boasts a compelling narrative that enriches its core PvE gameplay. The storyline revolves around a malevolent virus that has infected machines across the galaxy, and it's up to you and your fellow Atirans to trace it back to its source at the galaxy's heart and stop it. To achieve this, you'll navigate through procedurally generated mission chains in each sector. These missions can vary in length, from 10 minutes to an hour, and are color-coded on the Jump Map to indicate the level of danger and potential rewards.
Enhancing the experience is Iris, a non-infected AI you encounter in the Prologue who serves as a mission narrator, adding a welcome layer of structure to the already solid gameplay. The Hangar acts as your base of operations, where you can spend in-game currency to purchase and customize outfits, view the Galaxy Map, and even play a bit of soccer in your downtime.
The core four-player gameplay is nothing short of exhilarating. Missions rarely go as planned; your ship may come under attack en route, necessitating one player to pilot and use the pilot’s chair weapons, while another mans the ship's 360-degree-pivoting cannon. Meanwhile, the remaining players might be outside, magnetically booted to the hull, taking shots at enemy ships. Should your ship be damaged, players must rush inside, grab a fire extinguisher, and navigate through vents to douse the flames, all while keeping essential systems like the pineapple pizza-maker operational!

Upon reaching your destination, all four players disembark and navigate the structure to retrieve the coveted loot. The relentless waves of hostile, infected robots demand teamwork at every turn. Your grappling hook becomes an invaluable tool for swift movement, both on the ground and in space. Once you secure the loot, one player must carry it back to the ship while the others provide cover, protecting their vulnerable teammate.
Both my demo last year and my most recent one were brief. This proves that Jump Ship is enjoyable even in short sessions, making it easy to fit into a busy schedule. However, I haven't yet experienced enough of the broader mission structure and the variety offered by its procedurally generated content to fully assess its potential for endless replayability. Nevertheless, everything I've seen so far suggests that Jump Ship has all the makings of a potential hit. With its compelling blend of mechanics and narrative, I eagerly anticipate diving deeper into this promising game.
