The game plunges players into an alternate future diverging from our own timeline in the late 1980s. Central to this future is a new, dominant religion that emerges within the Intergalactic universe. This religion's birthplace and initial spread are confined to a single planet, which eventually becomes completely isolated from the rest of the galaxy.
