A Sense of Authenticity in Fictionalizing Real-Life Locations

Ghost of Yōtei continues the tradition of integrating real-life Japanese locales into its narrative, this time setting the stage in Ezo, known today as Hokkaido. In a detailed PlayStation Blog post dated May 15, Sucker Punch's Game Director, Nate Fox, elaborated on why the team chose Hokkaido for protagonist Atsu's quest.

Sucker Punch's previous endeavor with Tsushima Island in the first Ghost game demonstrated their prowess in recreating actual locations, earning them accolades from Japanese critics. Furthermore, Fox and Creative Director Jason Connell were honored as ambassadors of Tsushima for their cultural storytelling.

Tsushima's Mayor Naoki Hitakatsu, in a 2021 statement, expressed gratitude for their work, saying, "Even many Japanese are unaware of the Gen-ko period's history. Globally, Tsushima's name and location are virtually unknown, so we are immensely thankful for their storytelling with such stunning graphics and deep narratives."

The team's approach to both Tsushima and now Hokkaido is rooted in creating an authentic and believable backdrop for their fictional tales. For Ghost of Yōtei, Hokkaido was chosen for its breathtaking beauty and its historical position at the edge of the Japanese empire in 1603. Fox emphasized that this setting was ideal for Atsu's revenge narrative, illustrating how her actions shape perceptions of her. He remarked, "If you're going to tell a ghost story, do it in a dramatic location."

A Perfect Blend of Beauty and Danger

Fox highlighted their research trips to Japan, which were crucial for capturing the essence of their setting. One memorable visit was to Shiretoko National Park, where the team found a striking mix of natural beauty and inherent danger. This environment perfectly encapsulated the game's desired atmosphere. "A perfect marriage of beauty and danger, that was the exact feeling we wanted for our game. That's when I knew Hokkaido was the right choice," Fox explained.

Another key location was Mt. Yōtei, revered by the Ainu people as "Machineshir," or "the Female Mountain." The Ainu, who have long inhabited Hokkaido, hold a profound connection to nature and consider the mountain sacred. For the developers, Mt. Yōtei symbolizes Hokkaido and represents the family Atsu lost.

Fox noted that interacting with locals and developing new concepts during their trip was enriching. Their visit helped them "capture the spirit of it in our fictional version of the island." Acknowledging their initial cultural ignorance as foreigners, Sucker Punch is committed to learning more and will soon share additional details on how they address this.

As previously announced, Ghost of Yōtei is set to be their most ambitious project yet, generating significant anticipation among fans. The game is slated for release on October 2, 2025, exclusively on the PlayStation 5. Stay tuned to our updates for more information on this exciting new title!
