Expanding the roster to seven playable characters plus a dedicated exploration companion, the 33rd expedition welcomes Monoco and Esquie.

Monoco, a friendly yet bloodthirsty Gestral, possesses a unique ability: transforming into defeated enemies, leveraging their powers in combat. Gestrals are notably unaffected by the Paintress's power, making Monoco a valuable asset.

Esquie, a living legend considered the oldest and strongest being, takes a different approach. He serves as a key to unlocking various locations on the open-world map. Collecting his special stones grants the team new abilities and access to previously unreachable areas.

Previously revealed characters (Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso) were showcased in a YouTube video on October 16, 2024. Despite their diverse personalities and motivations, they unite to break the cycle of death.

Reimagined Turn-Based Combat and Deep Character Customization

Sandfall Interactive isn't just focusing on aesthetics; they've reinvented classic turn-based RPG combat, as highlighted in an Xbox Wire article on January 23, 2025. CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche explains their vision: "We wanted it to be like a game that feels like a real game. So every character has their own playstyle…but they also feel very different from each other."

This is achieved through a reactive turn-based system incorporating real-time elements. Players can dodge attacks, parry for massive damage, and deliver powerful attacks with precise button presses. Difficulty settings adjust the parry/dodge window for accessibility.

Deep character customization is a core feature. Each character boasts unique mechanics and skill trees—for example, Lune accumulates "Stain" to enhance her abilities. Evolving "Pictos" (equipment modifiers) after four battles unlocks Luminas (passive effects), creating hundreds of build possibilities through Luminas, skills, and abilities. This system challenges both strategic thinking and reflexes.
