In a revealing interview with Famitsu, ahead of the PC port launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, series producer Yoshinori Kitase and game director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that the story for the third installment is now complete, and the development is progressing smoothly without any delays.

Hamaguchi shared that the team began working on Part 3 immediately after finishing FF7 Rebirth. "We are on track with the schedule we set when we launched the remake project, and we're excited for fans to experience the final chapter," he stated.

Kitase, who had previously mentioned the completion of the main scenario for Part 3 before the PlayStation 5 release of FF7 Rebirth in February 2024, provided an update. "The storywriting was completed at the end of last year, and I'm very satisfied with the outcome," he said. He credited Tetsuya Nomura, the creative director of FF7 Rebirth, for finalizing the story while ensuring it respects the original while delivering a satisfying conclusion. "We're confident that it will meet the fans' expectations for the trilogy's end," Kitase added.

Team Admits That They Were Worried About Rebirth’s Release At First

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second installment of the remake series, launched in early 2024 to widespread acclaim and positive reviews from critics and fans alike. Despite its success, the development team had initial concerns about the game's reception.

Kitase and Hamaguchi admitted to Famitsu that they were apprehensive about how Rebirth would be received, given it was a sequel in a trilogy and a remake. "I was concerned about how it would resonate with the gaming community," Kitase confessed. "But the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received was a relief and a motivation for us to continue with confidence into the third game." Hamaguchi added, "The positive atmosphere around Rebirth has set a great stage for the final installment."

The game's success has been attributed to its engaging storyline and gameplay, thanks in part to Hamaguchi's "logic-based approach" to development. In a separate interview with Automaton, he explained their process of incorporating feedback. "If our goal is A, and someone suggests B instead, we can't just shift our direction. But if the suggestion is to enhance A with B, then we consider it," he noted.

PC Gaming Is Now The Norm

The interview also touched on the growing trend of PC gaming. Both Kitase and Hamaguchi noted the shift in the gaming industry towards PC as the preferred platform for many players. This trend has led to more games launching on PC alongside console releases, or shortly thereafter, to reach a broader audience.

Kitase pointed out the necessity of this shift due to rising development costs and the global accessibility of PCs. "PCs have no geographical boundaries, making them an essential platform to reach more players worldwide," he explained.

With the surge in PC gaming, the team prioritized the PC port of FF7 Rebirth. "The gaming landscape has significantly changed, pushing us to release the PC version of FF7 Rebirth sooner than we did with the first game," Hamaguchi mentioned.

Considering the lessons learned from the first two games, fans can look forward to a spectacular conclusion with Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3. There's even a possibility of a quicker PC release, ensuring that the entire Remake Project can be enjoyed by a global audience.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is now available on PC via Steam and on the PlayStation 5. For those yet to embark on this epic journey, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is accessible on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam.
