FF14 Faces WoW Housing Rivalry
World of Warcraft's upcoming housing system: A contrast to Final Fantasy XIV
Blizzard has offered a first glimpse into the player housing feature coming to World of Warcraft with the World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion, subtly contrasting its approach with that of Final Fantasy XIV. The WoW team highlighted a key objective: "A Home for Everyone."
This commitment to accessibility means players won't face exorbitant costs, lotteries, or demanding upkeep. Furthermore, unlike some other MMOs, subscription lapses won't result in property repossession. The core concept is straightforward: players purchase and personalize homes, open to visits from others.
This contrasts sharply with Final Fantasy XIV's housing system, renowned for its player creativity (resulting in in-game theaters, clubs, and more) but also infamous for its limited plots, high Gil costs, lotteries, and the risk of demolition for inactive properties.
World of Warcraft aims to avoid these pitfalls. Housing is shared among the Warband, allowing multiple characters (even across factions) to access the same home. While character restrictions based on faction remain (a Human can't own a Horde zone house), a Warband member of a different faction can, granting access to all members.
While the number of housing zones is limited (two, with "Neighborhoods" of around 50 plots each), these are instanced and offer both public and private options. Public areas are server-managed and dynamically generated, suggesting scalability and a less restrictive approach to plot availability.
Blizzard's vision for WoW housing extends beyond a simple feature. They envision a "long-lasting journey," promising ongoing updates and additions across future patches and expansions. This commitment, while acknowledging the shortcomings of other systems, signals a thoughtful and potentially more sustainable approach to player housing.
Further details are expected closer to the summer unveiling of World of Warcraft: Midnight.
