Minh "Gooseman" Le, one of Counter-Strike's co-creator, sat down for an interview with Spillhistorie.no in honor of Counter-Strike's 25th anniversary. Le and his partner, Jess Cliffe, created one of the most popular first-person shooting games Counter-Strike, considered now a classic in the genre.

In an exclusive interview, Le discussed how Valve played a vital role in making it one of the most popular FPS game. He retrospected his decision to sell Counter-Strike the rights to Valve, stating, "Yes, I’m happy with how things turned out with Valve, with regards to selling the IP to them. They have done a great job of maintaining the legacy of CS."

Counter-Strike's transition was full of challenges. Le stated, "I remember Steam had a lot of stability issues in the early days and there was several days where players could not even log in to play the game." It was rough and full of technical issues, but Le was thankful for the community's support in helping the team stabilize Steam. "Thankfully, we had a lot of help from the community as many people wrote helpful guides to help the transition go smoothly," he shared.

As an undergraduate student, Le started developing Counter-Strike as a Half-Life mod back in 1998.

"I was inspired by many of the old arcade games that I used to play, such as Virtua Cop, Time Crisis. I was also heavily inspired by movies such as HK action movies (John Woo), and Hollywood movies such as Heat, Ronin, Air Force One and the Tom Clancy movies in the 90s." In 1999, Cliffe joined him to work on Counter-Strike's maps.

Counter-Strike celebrated its 25th anniversary on June 19, marking its long-standing popularity among FPS fans. Counter-Strike 2, its latest installment, caters to almost 25 million players monthly. Valve's commitment to the Counter-Strike series made the game flourish, despite the heavy competition among FPS games.

Despite selling Counter-Strike to Valve, Le appears grateful and happy that the company took great care over his project. "It was very humbling because I viewed Valve with such high regard. I learned a lot from working at Valve because I got to work with some of the best game developers in the industry and they taught me some skills I would never have learned outside of Valve," Le shared.
