Which comics to read in the interim until Spider-Man 2 comes out on PC

Despite the less-than-stellar reputation surrounding the Amazing Spider-Man title, the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man comics haven't entirely fallen into disrepair. In fact, there are several Spider-Man novelizations well worth recommending. From chilling horror and psychological thrillers to lighthearted buddy-movie adventures and even children's stories, these books offer a fresh, multifaceted perspective on the web-slinger, exploring various facets of his character and experiences. We'll examine three distinct iterations: the Web of Past, Web of Dreams, and Web of Absurd. Let's see which resonates most with an Insomniac game.

Spine-Tingling Spider-Man
Writer: Saladin Ahmed
Artist: Juan Ferreira
Though primarily released in 2023 with a conclusion in 2024, Spine-Tingling Spider-Man is too compelling to ignore. Initially a digital comic, it received a print one-shot (#0) followed by a four-issue limited series. The comic masterfully utilizes a proven formula: a talented artist immersing the hero in a psychedelic descent into madness. Ferreira's expressive art style, even without dialogue, conveys a powerful narrative. Ahmed's script is equally strong, effectively capturing Peter's anxiety. However, Ferreira's art truly shines, becoming the central focus of this nightmarish journey. The main antagonist, Paul (the other Paul) from the zero-shot, uses song to steal dreams, forcing Spider-Man to fight off sleep while battling unsettling visions. The result is a captivating blend reminiscent of a Junji Ito collaboration, a 100-page art book brought to life.
The limited series further elevates the artistry, plunging Spidey into a directed nightmare akin to "Beau Is Afraid," showcasing a series of interconnected night terrors. From fears of social awkwardness to encounters with a creepy conductor, the visual storytelling is breathtaking. The contrast between simple and detailed artwork, a hallmark of mangaka and Junji Ito's style, is expertly employed. Ferreira uses hypertrophied monstrous faces juxtaposed with a simple, terrified Peter, maximizing emotional impact.
Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin
Writer: J.M. DeMatteis
Artist: Michael Sta. Maria
This story reveals a shocking secret: the first Goblin wasn't Norman Osborn! Uncover the startling origins of the Proto-Goblin, his connection to the Osborn family, and young Peter's role in this unfolding drama. This flashback series, a trend from Marvel's nostalgia marketing of the 80s and 90s, follows a familiar formula: revisiting a character's past with the original writer, creating a "lost" story from that era. While the quality of flashbacks has varied, this one is a gem. Shadow of the Green Goblin reminds us of DeMatteis's masterful storytelling, showcasing a dark, psychologically driven narrative reminiscent of Dostoyevsky's style. The story delves into Harry Osborn's trauma, tracing the origins of his descent into becoming the Green Goblin.
The Proto-Goblin, a relatively obscure character, is brilliantly developed. DeMatteis uses the backstory of the first Goblin serum test, revealing the transformation of Nels van Adder into a monstrous being. The story focuses on the human element, showcasing the characters' vulnerabilities. Peter is not the sole focus; he is entangled in the web of events leading to the rise of the Green Goblin. The comic masterfully builds suspense, showing the gradual descent into darkness of the Osborn family, long before Norman becomes the iconic villain.
Spider-Man: Reign 2
Writer/Artist: Kaare Andrews
In a dystopian New York ruled by Kingpin, a dome protects the city from zombies. Old Peter Parker, killed by his radioactive sperm, finds himself in a digital dream with Mary Jane. However, a young thief, Kitty Cat, shatters this illusion, forcing them to travel back in time to prevent disaster. This installment feels less like a sequel and more like a remake, starting anew. While often compared to Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again, Reign 2 shares similarities with Andrews' other work, Iron Fist: The Living Weapon.
Andrews' style is evident throughout, with brutal violence and a focus on raw emotion. The story is unapologetically dark, featuring time travel, unusual characters like Goblin children and a cybernetic Kingpin. The graphic violence and bleak tone are striking, and the story's themes of overwhelming burden and the need for letting go resonate deeply. While unconventional, Reign 2 offers a unique and powerful interpretation of Spider-Man's struggles.
