Valve Unveils New Development Approach for Deadlock Amid Online Dip
Deadlock, Valve's MOBA-shooter, is undergoing a development shift in response to a significant player decline. The game's peak concurrent player count has plummeted from over 170,000 to a mere 18,000-20,000. To address this, Valve is abandoning its previous bi-weekly update schedule.

Future updates will be released on a flexible timeline, prioritizing quality over frequency. While hotfixes will remain a regular occurrence, major updates will be more substantial and less frequent, allowing developers more time for thorough implementation and testing. A developer stated this revised approach will lead to more impactful updates overall.
Despite the player drop-off, Valve assures fans that Deadlock's development is not in jeopardy. The game is still in its early access phase, and a release date remains unannounced. The company's focus on quality and a potential internal green light for a new Half-Life title may also contribute to a delayed release.
Valve's strategy mirrors the evolution of Dota 2, which also transitioned from frequent updates to a more refined development process. This change is primarily about optimizing the development workflow for a superior final product, rather than a sign of the game's failure. The company's confidence rests on the belief that a high-quality game will naturally attract and retain players.
