The Central Concept Of Arthurian Myths And Knights

At Gamescom 2024, the team from Eclipse Glow Games sat down with Wccftech to discuss the innovative concept behind Tides of Annihilation, its gameplay mechanics, and the exciting potential for an anthology series.

Despite their roots in China, Eclipse Glow Games opted for a Western setting for Tides of Annihilation, influenced by the expectations of their financial backer, the Chinese conglomerate Tencent. "This game and Black Myth: Wukong are two projects invested in by Tencent, with different expectations set for each. While Black Myth: Wukong was aimed at the Chinese market, Tides of Annihilation was crafted with a Western audience in mind, leading us to choose the Arthurian legends," explained the game's producer. The central theme evolved around the concept of knights, ultimately culminating in the legendary King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

Set in a post-apocalyptic version of modern-day London, Tides of Annihilation portrays a city devastated by an Outworld invasion, leaving the protagonist, Gwendolyn, as seemingly the last human survivor. While rooted in a contemporary setting, the game seamlessly integrates fantasy elements, many inspired by the rich tapestry of Arthurian myths.

Devil May Cry-inspired Combat And Over 30 Bosses

Action-RPG enthusiasts will immediately recognize the influence of the classic Devil May Cry in Tides of Annihilation’s combat system. The developers openly admitted that the combat is "definitely more like Devil May Cry," but with the added benefit of customizable difficulty settings. This approach makes the game more accessible, catering to both seasoned players and newcomers to the action genre.

Players can tailor their combat style through various playstyles, choosing from four different weapons and over ten Knights to assist them in battle. In the narrative, Gwendolyn discovers her ability to command the legendary Knights of the Round Table, who join her in navigating the ruins of London to unravel the mystery of the invasion. With more than 30 unique bosses to challenge, the game promises an engaging and dynamic gameplay experience. "Players will have to prepare for very challenging boss fights," the team emphasized.

Plans Of Creating An Anthology

In the same interview, Eclipse Glow Games expressed their ambition to expand the Tides of Annihilation franchise into an anthology, exploring different settings and mythologies, potentially featuring a new protagonist for each installment. "We would still want to use the Outworld invasion concept that we're using for Tides of Annihilation," they noted, indicating that this theme could be the unifying thread for the series. The team is optimistic about the success of the initial title, hoping it will pave the way for more mythologies and games.

Currently in its beta phase, Tides of Annihilation is slated for a tentative launch in 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players will embark on an epic journey with Gwendolyn, as she battles against fate to save not only London but also the intertwined fantasy realm of Avalon.
