"Spectre Divide: Free Shooter Closes Weeks Post-Console Launch"
The free-to-play 3v3 shooter *Spectre Divide* is set to be discontinued just six months after its initial release in September 2024, and only weeks after launching on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game’s developer, Mountaintop Studios, will also be closing its doors.
Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell [ttpp] shared the news in an official statement posted on social media today, stating that the game’s Season 1 launch failed to reach the level of success required to maintain operations.
“Unfortunately, the Season 1 launch hasn’t achieved the level of success we needed to sustain the game and keep Mountaintop afloat,” Mitchell explained.
A Tactical Shooter with Unique Gameplay
Upon release, *Spectre Divide* was praised for its innovative Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters simultaneously during matches. This unique mechanic brought a fresh twist to the 3v3 tactical shooter genre and was highlighted in IGN’s positive preview of the game in August 2024.

In the early days post-launch, the game attracted around 400,000 players, with a peak of approximately 10,000 concurrent users across all platforms. However, engagement and revenue declined over time, making it unsustainable.
“As time has gone on, we haven’t seen enough active players and incoming revenue to cover the day-to-day costs of Spectre and the studio,” Mitchell continued. “Since the PC launch, we stretched our remaining capital as far as we could, but at this point, we’re out of funding to support the game.”
Exhausting All Options
The team reportedly explored every possible avenue to keep the project alive, including seeking a publisher, additional investment, or an acquisition. Unfortunately, in today’s challenging market, none of these efforts came to fruition.
The game will be taken offline within the next 30 days, and all player purchases made since the Season 1 launch will be refunded.
This news contradicts earlier statements from October 2024, when Mitchell insisted that *Spectre Divide* “isn’t going anywhere,” and that the studio had “the funds to support Spectre for a long time.”
A Trend of Live-Service Struggles
The closure of *Spectre Divide* follows a string of recent live-service disappointments, including the underperformance of Rocksteady’s *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* and Sony’s *Concord*, reinforcing the volatile nature of the current gaming industry landscape.
