Mortal Kombat 1 DLC Ends as Devs Move to New Project

Warner Bros. has officially dashed Mortal Kombat 1 fans' hopes for additional content, confirming the recent Definitive Edition marks the end of new DLC characters and story expansions.
The Numbers Tell the Story
While Mortal Kombat 1 moved a respectable 5 million copies, these figures pale in comparison to the franchise's record-breaking entries. For context, Mortal Kombat 11 became the series' top seller by surpassing Mortal Kombat X's 11 million units shortly after launch, eventually climbing to over 15 million by 2022.
The official Mortal Kombat Twitter account acknowledged fan disappointment, stating: "Our team at NetherRealm must now channel all efforts into our next project to deliver the quality our community deserves."
What Comes Next?
Warner Bros. remained tight-lipped about their upcoming project, though industry speculation strongly suggests developer NetherRealm will return to DC's fighting universe with Injustice 3.
The developer's full statement reads:
"We appreciate players' requests for ongoing Mortal Kombat 1 support. While we'll continue addressing balance issues, no further character DLC or story expansions are planned."
The T-1000 character release in March 2025 - arriving nearly eighteen months post-launch - now stands as Mortal Kombat 1's final major content update.
This abrupt ending contrasts with NetherRealm's previous support cycles - Mortal Kombat 11 received content updates for over two years before developers shifted focus.
Broken Promises?
The announcement contradicts earlier assurances from NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon, who tweeted in September 2024: "We remain fully committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 long-term."
The game experienced brief renewed interest in January thanks to the surprise Floyd ninja battle - a secret fight Boon had hinted at for years. However, this temporary buzz couldn't compensate for what many dedicated fans consider Mortal Kombat 1's underwhelming lifespan.
Despite these setbacks, Warner Bros. Discovery executives reaffirmed Mortal Kombat's significance during a November investor call, naming it among four core gaming franchises they plan to prioritize moving forward. The franchise's cinematic future also looks bright, with Mortal Kombat 2 slated for theatrical release later this year.
