Exploring Monster Hunter Wilds' Oilwell Basin: A Deep Dive into its Ecosystem and New Monsters

Monster Hunter Wilds introduces the Oilwell Basin, a unique locale unlike any other in the series. This fiery, oil-slicked landscape, described by director Yuya Tokuda, shifts dramatically depending on the environmental cycle (Fallow, Inclemency, Plenty). During the Fallow, it's a mud-and-oil-covered wasteland; Inclemency brings burning oilsilt; and Plenty reveals underlying minerals and artifacts, transforming the environment into something resembling a marine ecosystem.

Art director Kaname Fujioka explains the Oilwell Basin's vertical design, with distinct upper, middle, and lower strata, each offering unique challenges and environmental changes. The lower levels, in particular, feature creatures reminiscent of deep-sea or underwater volcanic life, leveraging knowledge gained from creating the Coral Highlands in Monster Hunter: World.

New Monsters of the Oilwell Basin:

• Rompopolo: This bizarre, globular monster utilizes toxic gas, inspired by the concept of a "mad scientist," resulting in a striking purple and red design. Its crafted equipment, however, is surprisingly cute.

• Ajarakan: A flaming, gorilla-like monster with a slimmer silhouette than Congalala. Its straightforward, powerful attacks, enhanced with fiery effects, make it a visually striking and easily understood opponent. The team added flashy moves to avoid its design becoming too simplistic.

• Nu Udra (Black Flame): The apex predator of the Oilwell Basin, Nu Udra is a massive, octopus-like creature covered in flammable oil. Its design, inspired by octopuses, features a striking silhouette and demonic horns, with its face intentionally ambiguous. Its movements are fluid and challenging, reflecting the team's long-held desire to create a truly mobile tentacled monster. The music accompanying its battles also incorporates demonic themes. Nu Udra's many tentacles can be severed, though only those that are not rotten yield good materials. Its sensory organs, located at the tips of its tentacles, glow to indicate its target, rendering Flash Bombs ineffective.

• Gravios' Return: Gravios, last seen in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, makes a welcome return, perfectly suited to the Oilwell Basin's environment. Its hardened carapace presents a significant challenge, requiring hunters to utilize the wound system and part breaking to overcome its defenses.

The development team emphasizes their dedication to creating unique and memorable monsters, drawing on past concepts and using new technologies to realize their ambitious visions. The Oilwell Basin, with its diverse ecosystem and challenging monsters, promises a truly unique hunting experience in Monster Hunter Wilds.
