Japanese Myth Revived: Bunraku Unveils Kunitsu-Gami's Origins
Capcom's new action strategy game, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, launched July 19th, celebrated its debut with a unique twist: a traditional Japanese Bunraku puppet theater performance. This innovative approach showcased both the game's deep Japanese roots and the artistry of Japan's cultural heritage to a global audience.

Bridging Tradition and Gameplay: A Cultural Fusion
The Osaka-based National Bunraku Theater, celebrating its 40th anniversary, created a special Bunraku show for the game's launch. Bunraku, a form of puppet theater using large puppets manipulated to a samisen (three-stringed lute) soundtrack, provided a captivating prequel to the game's narrative. Master Puppeteer Kanjuro Kiritake brought the game's protagonists, Soh and the Maiden, to life in a new piece titled "Ceremony of the Deity: The Maiden's Destiny."
"Bunraku, like Capcom, has deep roots in Osaka," Kiritake stated. "This collaboration allows us to share our art form with the world."
A Prequel Unveiled: Bunraku Meets Modern Technology
Capcom describes the performance as a "new form of Bunraku," blending traditional puppetry with cutting-edge CG backdrops from the game itself. This fusion of ancient art and modern technology aimed to introduce the captivating world of Bunraku to a wider, international audience. The company's goal was to highlight the game's strong Japanese cultural influences through this unique artistic partnership.
Bunraku's Influence: From Inspiration to Collaboration
Producer Tairoku Nozoe shared that director Shuichi Kawata's passion for Bunraku heavily influenced Kunitsu-Gami's development. Nozoe revealed that the game's design was already heavily inspired by the movements and staging of Ningyo Joruri Bunraku even before the collaboration with the National Bunraku Theater was conceived. The team's shared experience of a Bunraku performance solidified their decision to create this unique partnership.
Set on Mt. Kafuku, a mountain corrupted by a dark force, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess tasks players with purifying villages by day and protecting the Maiden by night, utilizing sacred masks to restore balance. The game is available now on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles, and is included with Xbox Game Pass. A free demo is also available across all platforms.
