GameStop's Silent Store Closures Spark Customer and Employee Outrage

GameStop, a once-dominant video game retailer, is quietly shutting down numerous US stores, leaving customers and employees reeling. The closures, often announced with little or no warning, represent a significant decline for the company, whose physical presence has shrunk by nearly one-third.

Founded over 44 years ago as Babbage's, GameStop reached its zenith in 2015, boasting over 6,000 locations worldwide and generating approximately $9 billion in annual revenue. However, the shift to digital game sales over the past nine years has severely impacted its business model. As of February 2024, according to ScrapeHero, GameStop's US store count has plummeted to roughly 3,000.

Following a December 2024 SEC filing hinting at further store closures, a wave of social media posts from both customers and employees confirmed the trend. Many express disappointment, citing the loss of convenient, affordable access to games and consoles. The Ongoing Decline of GameStop

The recent closures are consistent with GameStop's overall downward trajectory. A March 2024 Reuters report predicted a grim outlook, highlighting a 287-store closure in the previous year and a nearly 20% (approximately $432 million) revenue drop in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to 2022.
