FBC: Firebreak - The Unexpected Multiplayer FPS Hit

When Remedy, the studio behind the critically acclaimed single-player third-person game *Control*, announced they were venturing into multiplayer with *FBC: Firebreak*, skepticism was natural. However, having seen a hands-off demo, my doubts were quickly dispelled. *FBC: Firebreak* is a three-player PvE first-person shooter set six years after the events of *Control*, and it stands out brilliantly in the crowded landscape of online shooters. It's refreshingly original, delightfully weird, and importantly, it doesn't demand a massive time commitment. As game director Mike Kayatta emphasized, "We're not about daily check-ins. We're not interested in monthly grinds. We don't want to give anybody a second job." A refreshing approach in today's gaming world.
In *FBC: Firebreak*, you can dive into gameplay for just 20 minutes or extend your session to a few hours, thanks to the engaging Perk unlocks and character combinations. The setting? The Oldest House, where you play as volunteer first responders tackling bizarre crises. You're not just any hero; you're a secretary, a ranger, or someone with a "normal" job, stepping up when things go awry. While the Federal Bureau of Control might not call you expendable, the reality might suggest otherwise.

When you log in, you select a Job (mission), a Crisis Kit (loadout), set the Threat Level (difficulty), and Clearance Level, determining the number of zones you'll navigate. These zones, separated by containment doors, lead you through the stages of the Job. One such Job, "Paper Chase," takes place in an office section of the FBC building, where you and your teammates combat the spreading Hiss. You can escape at any time, but to upgrade and buy new gear with in-game currency, you'll need to make it back to HQ safely. The longer you search for currency, the tougher your escape becomes.
What sets *FBC: Firebreak* apart is its arsenal of uniquely bizarre weapons. From a hand-cranked snowball-launching gun that can douse fires and soak sticky-note monsters to a zapper that can unleash lightning storms, the weaponry has a charmingly homebrew feel. Even traditional weapons like machine guns and shotguns find their place, especially after dealing with the aforementioned sticky-note monsters.
Speaking of which, the primary goal of "Paper Chase" is to eliminate all the sticky notes before they take over. The number of notes to destroy increases as the mission progresses, culminating in a battle against a gigantic sticky-note monster, reminiscent of Spider-Man 3's Sandman but made of Post-It notes.
Beyond the quirky weapons, *FBC: Firebreak* introduces fun in-universe gameplay mechanics. An office supply shelf refills your ammo, a makeshift turret is assembled from a box, a stereo speaker keeps the Hiss at bay, and a rinse station removes aggressive sticky notes. Unlockable Perks add more variety, such as bullets returning to your clip upon missing or extinguishing flames by jumping. With duplicates, these Perks become stronger, and triplicates allow sharing with teammates.
You don't need three players to enjoy *FBC: Firebreak*; solo and duo play are also supported. Remedy aims for accessible PC specs while also supporting high-end features like DLSS4, nVidia Reflex, and full ray-tracing. The game will be Steam Deck verified and available on Xbox and PC Game Pass, PlayStation Plus Extra, and Premium from day one. While post-launch content plans remain under wraps, paid cosmetics will be the only microtransactions.

While I haven't played *FBC: Firebreak* yet, the demo certainly impressed. It's not your typical multiplayer shooter, and its design as a flexible, get-in-and-get-out experience is a welcome nod to a bygone era of gaming.
