"Earthblade Cancelled: Celeste Devs Cite Disagreements"
If you're a fan of indie games, you might have heard the recent news about the cancellation of Earthblade, the much-anticipated follow-up to the critically acclaimed Celeste. Developed by Extremely OK Games (EXOK), the team behind the beloved indie hit, Earthblade has been officially scrapped due to internal disagreements.

In a heartfelt announcement on their official website, EXOK revealed that the project has been shelved following a breakdown within the team. According to Maddy Thorson, the director of EXOK, the split was primarily caused by a disagreement over the intellectual property rights of Celeste. While Thorson didn’t go into specifics, she acknowledged the emotional toll it took on everyone involved.

Thorson explained that the discord began between herself, Noel Berry (the lead programmer), and former art director Pedro Medeiros. The tension ultimately led to Medeiros leaving the project to work on his own venture, Neverway, under a new studio. Despite the circumstances, Thorson emphasized that Medeiros and his team remain respected figures in the community, and she encouraged fans to avoid hostility toward them.

While the departure of Medeiros was a significant blow, Thorson noted that it wasn’t the sole reason for the cancellation. She admitted that the project itself was struggling to meet expectations, particularly given the immense success of Celeste. The pressure to outdo their previous work proved overwhelming, leading to burnout among the team. Ultimately, Thorson decided that continuing with Earthblade was neither feasible nor sustainable.
EXOK’s Future Plans

Looking ahead, Thorson and Berry aim to pivot toward smaller, more manageable projects. They expressed a desire to return to the collaborative spirit that defined their earlier works, like TowerFall. By working at their own pace, they hope to recapture the joy of creation while learning from the challenges faced during Earthblade's development.
Although Earthblade will never see the light of day, the story it sought to tell—a tale of Névoa, the child of fate returning to a devastated Earth—remains a poignant reminder of the passion and creativity that drove the project. For now, the team is focusing on rebuilding, and fans can only hope that their next endeavor will bring the same warmth and inspiration as their past successes.
