Dynasty Warriors: Origins Dev Team Was Instructed to “Go Kill The Player”

Dynasty Warriors: Origins ups the ante with significantly more challenging enemy encounters. Producer Tomohiko Sho's directive to the development team? A simple, yet impactful, "Go and kill the player." This article delves into the design choices behind the game's increased difficulty.
A Deadlier Battlefield: "Go And Kill The Player"
The heightened challenge in Dynasty Warriors: Origins stems directly from producer Tomohiko Sho's instruction. In an interview with PlayStation.Blog, Sho explained the reasoning behind the tougher enemies: to inject a greater sense of realism. The developers aimed to portray the battlefield's brutality, highlighting the struggle for survival faced by both player and enemy alike.
While increasing the difficulty, Sho emphasized a balance to avoid frustrating players. The challenges are designed to be rewarding, offering a sense of accomplishment even for less experienced action game players. He acknowledged the difficulty in harmonizing the series' signature "musou" exhilaration (defeating countless enemies) with the realistic portrayal of a warzone.
A Return to Roots: The "Origins" Title
The absence of a numbered title, a first for the Dynasty Warriors series, is a significant departure. Instead of Dynasty Warriors 10, the game is titled Dynasty Warriors: Origins, emphasizing its focus on the early stages of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
In an interview at the 2024 Tokyo Game Show with TheGamer, Sho clarified that Origins covers the narrative only up to the Battle of Chibi (Battle of Red Cliffs). This focused approach allows for a more thorough and intense exploration of this pivotal historical period.
Arriving seven years after the last mainline entry, Dynasty Warriors: Origins introduces an original protagonist, the Nameless Hero, navigating the power struggles of Han Dynasty China. Based on the classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the game blends historical events with fictional elements.
Released January 17th, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is currently available on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Check out Game8's review for a more in-depth analysis!
