Like a Dragon: Yakuza – October 24th Premiere
A Fresh Interpretation of Kazuma Kiryu
At San Diego Comic-Con on July 26th, Sega and Amazon unveiled the first trailer for the live-action series, *Like a Dragon: Yakuza*.The teaser showcased Ryoma Takeuchi (known for Kamen Rider Drive) as the iconic Kazuma Kiryu and Kento Kaku as the main antagonist, Akira Nishikiyama. Director Masayoshi Yokoyama emphasized the actors' unique approach to the characters. In a Sega interview at SDCC, he stated, "Their portrayals are vastly different from the game, but that's the beauty of it." Yokoyama acknowledged the game's perfected portrayal of Kiryu but welcomed the fresh perspective the series offers.
The teaser briefly showcased iconic locations like the Coliseum in Underground Purgatory and a confrontation between Kiryu and Futoshi Shimano.
The teaser's description promises a depiction of "fierce yet passionate gangsters and the lives of those in Kamurochō, a fictional district inspired by Kabukichō."
Loosely based on the first game, the series follows Kazuma Kiryu and his childhood friends, exploring aspects of Kiryu's life previously unseen in the games.
Sega's Interview with Masayoshi Yokoyama
Addressing initial fan concerns about the series potentially overlooking the game's lighter moments, Yokoyama assured fans that the Prime Video adaptation captures "the essence of the original."
In his SDCC interview with Sega, Yokoyama explained his primary goal: to avoid mere imitation. He aimed for viewers to experience Like a Dragon as if it were their first encounter with the story.
"Honestly, it was so good, I was envious," Yokoyama continued. "They made the 20-year-old setting their own, while remaining true to the original story."
He further teased a surprising twist at the end of the first episode, claiming it elicited a strong reaction from him.
While the teaser is brief, fans won't have long to wait. Like a Dragon: Yakuza premieres exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on October 24th, with the first three episodes released simultaneously. The remaining three episodes will be available on November 1st.
