Stop Destroying Video Games Petition Gains Wide Support in 7 EU Countries

EU Gamers Rally Against "Abandonware": Petition Nears 400,000 Signatures
A European Union petition demanding publishers maintain the playability of online games after server shutdowns is gaining significant traction. The "Stop Destroying Video Games" initiative has already surpassed its signature threshold in seven EU countries – Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden – accumulating 397,943 signatures, or 39% of its 1 million goal.
The petition, launched in June, directly addresses the growing frustration over games becoming unplayable after support ceases. It calls for legislation requiring publishers to ensure games remain functional, even after official server closures, preventing the remote disabling of games without providing reasonable alternatives for continued play.
The petition highlights the controversy surrounding Ubisoft's shutdown of The Crew in March 2024, leaving millions of players unable to access their purchased game. This incident, along with similar examples, fuels the argument for consumer protection and the right to continue playing games that have already been purchased.
While the petition is still short of its target, EU citizens have until July 31st, 2025, to add their support. Although non-EU citizens cannot sign, they are encouraged to spread awareness of this important initiative. The movement underscores a growing demand for greater consumer rights within the video game industry.
