Nightreign, the latest expansion for Elden Ring, features a roster of bosses drawn from both Elden Ring itself and previous FromSoftware titles. Director Junya Ishizaki clarified the reasoning behind this inclusion in a recent Gamespot interview (February 12, 2025), emphasizing a gameplay-driven approach rather than a deep lore integration.

Ishizaki stated that the diverse boss selection was crucial for the expansion's gameplay. Leveraging familiar, yet challenging, encounters from previous games provided a necessary breadth and depth to the boss fights, enhancing the overall experience. He acknowledged fan affection for these classic bosses, reassuring players that lore consistency wasn't compromised for the sake of inclusion. The focus, he stressed, remained on creating a cohesive and enjoyable gameplay experience within Nightreign's unique atmosphere.

While the presence of these bosses may not significantly impact Elden Ring's overarching narrative, Ishizaki sees their inclusion as a fun addition. Players are encouraged to focus on the main antagonist, the Night Lord, and its potential connection to the broader Elden Ring lore.

Familiar Faces, New Challenges

Two bosses from previous FromSoftware titles are confirmed for Nightreign: the Nameless King from Dark Souls 3 and the Centipede Demon from the original Dark Souls. The appearance of The Duke’s Dear Freja from Dark Souls 2 is also strongly hinted at by in-game imagery.

The Nameless King, Gwyn's firstborn son, presents a formidable challenge in Dark Souls 3, known for his devastating wind and lightning attacks. The Centipede Demon, a multi-headed monstrosity from the first Dark Souls, spews fireballs and is shrouded in lore related to the Witch of Izalith and the Flame of Chaos.
