"Saw XI Delayed: Lionsgate and Producer Disputes Stall Project"
It's a surprising turn of events for fans of the Saw franchise: the much-anticipated Saw XI has been officially stalled and won't be hitting theaters this fall as originally planned. This delay, however, isn't due to creative differences but rather managerial issues.
According to Saw XI screenwriter Patrick Melton's statement to The Hollywood Reporter, there has been no progress since May. "It's stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There's higher-level things at play," Melton explained. He and his writing partner Marcus Dunstan had submitted a draft of the script back in spring 2024, and the delay stems from ongoing disputes between the producers and Lionsgate. "The reason it's held up is just, there's inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can't quite get on the same page," Melton added.
Originally slated for a September 2024 release, frequent franchise director Kevin Greutert was attached to the project back in December 2023. However, fans were disheartened when the film's release was pushed back an entire year to September 2025. This delay came after the box office success of Saw X, the 10th installment, which revitalized the franchise, earning over $120 million globally. The strong performance of Saw X had naturally fueled excitement for Saw XI among both fans and studio executives.
What makes this delay even more disappointing is that Saw XI was set to explore a timely topic. While specific plot details remain under wraps, Melton likened the film's narrative to that of Saw VI, which he co-wrote with Dunstan and was directed by Greutert. In Saw VI, John Kramer, also known as Jigsaw (played by Tobin Bell), targets health insurance executives for their unethical practices.
"Saw XI may or may not be made, but we have a very timely story in it, and I hope it gets made just because of that," Melton told THR. He further elaborated that the film would resonate with themes similar to those in Saw VI, where ordinary citizens feel powerless and frustrated. "It taps into the same themes of Saw VI, where you're a citizen, you feel angry and frustrated with something, you feel like you can't do anything, and John Kramer's going to do it." This approach would have allowed the Saw franchise to revisit and reinterpret these themes in light of current global issues, though it now seems uncertain whether fans will ever see this vision come to life.
