Xbox Friend Requests Finally Reintroduced After a Decade
Xbox Revives Friend Requests: A Decade-Long Wait Ends

Xbox has finally reinstated the much-requested friend request system, ending a ten-year absence. This welcome change addresses a long-standing community plea and offers gamers more control over their online interactions.
A Two-Way Street: More Control, More Connection
The return of friend requests, announced via blog post and X (formerly Twitter), marks a significant shift from the previous "follow" system. As Xbox Senior Product Manager Klarke Clayton stated, "Friends are now a two-way, invite-approved relationship, giving you more control and flexibility." This means users can once again send, accept, or decline friend requests directly through the console's People tab.
The "follow" system, implemented on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, allowed users to see each other's activity without mutual consent. While fostering openness, it lacked the targeted connection of friend requests. The lack of a clear distinction between friends and followers often led to confusion.

The "follow" function will remain, enabling users to track content creators or communities without reciprocal action. Existing friends and followers will be automatically categorized under the new system, maintaining existing relationships.
Privacy and Customization:
Microsoft emphasizes user privacy. The update introduces enhanced privacy and notification settings, allowing users to manage who can send friend requests, who can follow them, and which notifications they receive. These settings are accessible within the Xbox settings menu.

Positive Reception and Anticipation:
The announcement has been met with enthusiastic responses on social media. Users celebrate the return, highlighting the previous system's shortcomings. The humorously surprised reactions from those unaware of the feature's absence underscore its significance to many.

While the exact release date remains unannounced, the feature is currently in testing with Xbox Insiders on consoles and PC. A full rollout is expected later this year. Joining the Xbox Insiders program offers early access to this highly anticipated feature.
