'Fallouts Like That Happen, It's Just Part of the Deal' — Mass Effect 1 and 2 Composer Jack Wall Discusses Why He Failed to Return for Mass Effect 3
Composer Jack Wall explains his absence from the Mass Effect 3 soundtrack, a departure that surprised fans given his acclaimed work on the first two games. Wall collaborated with BioWare to create the iconic 80s-inspired scores for Mass Effect (2007) and Mass Effect 2 (2010), the latter often lauded as one of the greatest RPGs ever made. His Mass Effect 2 score, featuring the memorable "Suicide Mission," remains a fan favorite.
However, Wall's absence from the 2012 Mass Effect 3 soundtrack is now attributed to a disagreement with then-development chief Casey Hudson. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Wall stated, "Casey was not particularly happy with me at the end," adding that despite the Bafta nomination and the score's success, it didn't meet Hudson's expectations.
While Wall remained tight-lipped about the specifics, hinting at "creative tension," he acknowledged the professional fallout. He described the experience as a challenging but ultimately isolated incident in his career.
Wall offered more detail on the difficulties in completing Mass Effect 2 and integrating "Suicide Mission," suggesting this period might have contributed to the strained relationship. He described the process as "the biggest mind-f***ing thing I’ve ever done," highlighting the lack of support due to BioWare's intense focus on finishing the game. Despite the challenges, he expressed pride in the final result, calling the ending sequence one of the best he's ever experienced.
Following Mass Effect 2, Wall transitioned to composing for the Call of Duty franchise, most recently contributing to Black Ops 6. BioWare, currently developing the next Mass Effect installment after Dragon Age: The Veilguard, has yet to reveal its choice of composer.
