Vampire Survivors Dev on Film Adaptation Challenges: No Plot in Game

May 18,25(9 months ago)

Vampire Survivors developer Poncle has shared insights into the challenges of adapting their hit game into a film, a project that was initially announced as an animated series in 2023. In a recent Steam post, Poncle confirmed they are collaborating with Story Kitchen on a live-action film, highlighting the inherent difficulties due to the game's lack of a traditional plot.

Poncle emphasized their cautious approach to the adaptation, stating, "As mentioned last year, rather than jumping the gun and make stuff for the sake of making it, we have preferred to wait to find partners that felt right, especially because to make anything that isn't a video game out of Vampire Survivors requires good ideas, creativity, and that quirky knowledge of the game." They acknowledged the complexity of the task, noting, "That is a very difficult triplet to get 100% right. Please remember the game has no plot — it doesn't? — so nobody can really anticipate how a film about it is going to be. That is part of what makes it exciting."

The developer humorously pointed out the irony of adapting a game with no story, saying, "the most important thing in Vampire Survivors is the story." As a result, no release date has been set for the film, reflecting the uncertainty around how the game will be translated into a cinematic experience.

Vampire Survivors itself is a fast-paced gothic horror game with rogue-lite elements that allows players to strategically snowball against hordes of monsters. Originally launched as a modest indie title on Steam, it quickly became a massive success, gaining widespread popularity. Poncle has since enriched the game with numerous updates, now featuring 50 playable characters and 80 weapons, alongside two major expansions and the Ode to Castlevania DLC.

In IGN's 8/10 review, they praised the game for its deceptive simplicity and deep gameplay, stating, "Need a game to play while listening to podcasts? This is it. Vampire Survivors is outwardly simple but turns out to be an incredibly deep hole to fall down — though it's not without extended dull periods when you get ahead of its curve."
