The musical mastermind behind HBO's blockbuster The Last of Us TV adaptation has confirmed plans for "at least two more seasons," strongly hinting at an upcoming fourth installment.

"There's absolutely no doubt about it - we're doing at least two more seasons," composer Jake Staley revealed during an appearance on The Last of Us: Savage Starlight podcast. "That's the bare minimum I can tell you right now."

This revelation doesn't come entirely unexpectedly. Showrunner Craig Mazin recently suggested a fourth season would be practically necessary to properly conclude the story adapted from Naughty Dog's acclaimed video game series. According to Mazin, wrapping everything up in Season 3 alone "would take an eternity." While Season 3 might run longer than its predecessor, he emphasized that "there's simply no way to complete this narrative arc within just three seasons."

HBO reports overwhelming success for The Last of Us Season 2, with its global audience surpassing 90 million viewers since Season 1 concluded. Despite lower finale numbers attributed to the Memorial Day holiday, the network remains enthusiastic about the show's performance. Meanwhile, Mazin and creative partner Neil Druckmann recently confessed they're still determining the exact involvement of certain fan-favorite characters in future seasons.

The creative team recently appeared at IGN Live to provide deeper insights into their adaptation process, detailing the creative decisions behind pivotal moments including Joel's demise, the terrifying horde sequence, and the emotionally charged planetarium scene.
