Cancelled Transformers Game: Leaked Gameplay Footage Surfaces

News of the cancelled Transformers: Reactivate has been followed by the re-emergence of previously leaked gameplay footage. Splash Damage, the developer, announced the co-op title in 2022, promising a multiplayer experience featuring Generation 1 Autobots and Decepticons uniting against an alien threat to Earth.

Despite the 2022 Game Awards announcement, little gameplay was publicly shown before the cancellation. Leaks and a few related action figures were the only glimpses fans received. The cancellation announcement led to speculation, with Splash Damage shifting focus to other projects and potential staff redundancies.

Shortly after the cancellation, leaked footage from a 2020 build surfaced online. This footage showcases Bumblebee navigating a destroyed city, seamlessly transforming between robot and vehicle modes, and utilizing various weapons. The gameplay bears resemblance to Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, but features Bumblebee battling "the Legion," an alien force serving as the game's antagonists, rather than Decepticons.

Despite some missing textures, the leaked footage appears polished, even incorporating environmental destruction. The clip concludes with a silent, unfinished cutscene depicting Bumblebee emerging from a portal in a ruined New York City, communicating with an ally named Devin about the Legion's attacks.

Numerous other leaks, dating back to 2020 (two years before the official announcement and four years before cancellation), exist. While Transformers: Reactivate will remain unplayed, the leaked footage offers a look at Splash Damage's ambitious, yet ultimately unsuccessful, multiplayer Transformers project.
