Top MicroSD Express Cards for Nintendo Switch 2 Revealed

With the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, it's crucial to note that the console comes with a built-in storage of just 256GB. If you're eager to amass a library of games without the hassle of constant uninstalling and reinstalling, expanding that storage is essential. However, the new console diverges from its predecessor by mandating the use of a MicroSD Express card, which, while offering superior speed, comes at a higher cost than traditional UHS-based SD cards.
MicroSD Express cards, though not new, are scarce on the market as their utility has yet to be fully embraced by creative professionals. With the imminent launch of the Switch 2, expect a surge in the availability of these cards to meet the demand.
Since the system hasn't been released yet, I haven't had the chance to test any of these Nintendo Switch 2 SD cards. However, they come from trusted manufacturers known for producing top-notch storage expansion solutions.
Why MicroSD Express?
The Nintendo Switch 2's exclusive use of MicroSD Express cards for storage expansion might seem puzzling, but it's not without reason. The console features UFS flash storage, akin to that in smartphones, which is significantly faster than the eMMC drive in the original Switch. By requiring MicroSD Express cards, Nintendo ensures that developers can rely on consistent, high-speed storage, whether the game is installed internally or on an expansion card.
Traditional MicroSD cards are limited to storing screenshots and videos from the first-gen Switch, offering no flexibility for game storage like the PS5 does with last-generation titles on external drives. For the Nintendo Switch 2, a MicroSD Express card is non-negotiable for game storage expansion.
1. Lexar Play Pro
The Best MicroSD Express Card
Among the available MicroSD Express cards, the Lexar Play Pro stands out as the fastest and largest capacity option. Boasting read speeds up to 900MB/s and available in sizes up to 1TB, this card is the top choice for Switch 2 users. However, due to high demand, it's currently out of stock. Keep an eye on it, especially the 1TB model, and consider ordering through Adorama, which has it on backorder until July.
2. SanDisk MicroSD Express
The MicroSD Express Card You Can Actually Buy Right Now
SanDisk, a renowned name in the SD card industry, offers a MicroSD Express card that's readily available. While it tops out at 256GB, effectively doubling your Switch 2's storage, it's a solid choice if you're looking to expand without waiting. With read speeds of up to 880MB/s, it's slightly slower than the Lexar Play Pro but still offers robust performance for gaming. If you want to secure your storage expansion immediately, this is a reliable option.
3. Samsung MicroSD Express for Switch 2
The Official Option We Know Very Little About
Samsung's MicroSD Express card, sold directly by Nintendo, adds an official touch to your storage solution. However, specifics about its performance and available capacities remain undisclosed. The 256GB model is currently the only known option. While details are sparse, opting for a card with Nintendo's endorsement can offer peace of mind. I've reached out to Samsung for more information and will update this article once I have it.
MicroSD Express FAQ
How fast is MicroSD Express?
MicroSD Express cards are significantly faster than traditional SD cards, utilizing PCI Express 3.1 technology, akin to that used in PC SSDs. While full-sized SD Express cards can achieve read speeds up to 3,940MB/s, MicroSD Express cards max out at 985MB/s. This speed is still a considerable improvement over the MicroSD cards used in the original Nintendo Switch.
How long will a MicroSD Express card last?
Like all SD cards, MicroSD Express cards are not designed for long-term data storage and have a finite lifespan. Environmental factors and physical handling play a significant role in their durability. Expect a MicroSD Express card to last between 5-10 years, and always ensure to back up important data to safeguard against potential card failure.
