Choosing the right iPhone can be daunting given the vast array of options available. In 2024, Apple released the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models, followed by the more recent iPhone 16e, expanding the choices even further. Whether you're aiming for the latest model or considering other options, it's essential to weigh your preferences and needs.

iPhone 16 Pro
Best Overall iPhone
Apple iPhone 16 Pro
2The iPhone 16 Pro strikes the perfect balance between size and power. It offers a compact form factor ideal for one-handed use while maintaining the full suite of features and camera sensors found in the larger Pro Max model. If you prefer a bigger screen, consider upgrading to the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
The A18 Pro chip in the iPhone 16 Pro delivers exceptional performance for daily tasks and gaming. It achieved the highest Geekbench 6 single-core score I've seen in both phones and laptops. The GPU also excels, allowing for high frame rates in the latest games at maximum settings.
Apple's build quality is luxurious, though the color options are less vibrant. The screen is stunning, combining high brightness and contrast with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Despite Apple's claims about Ceramic Shield glass durability, it's still prone to scratches, so consider additional protection.
The iPhone 16 Pro's camera system is impressive, especially the main sensor, which performs well in low-light conditions. The ultra-wide camera, while useful for capturing more in the frame, showed some softness and noise in my tests, likely due to focusing issues that could be mitigated with manual focus. The 5x telephoto lens is great for portraits and distant subjects. The new Camera Control feature enhances the user experience, though it could benefit from further refinement in future updates.

iPhone 16
Best Mid-Range iPhone
Apple iPhone 16
2The iPhone 16 offers a compelling mid-range option, delivering robust performance without the higher price tag of its Pro counterparts. The introduction of Apple Intelligence necessitated a more powerful chip, so the iPhone 16 comes equipped with the A18, nearly matching the A18 Pro's performance and surpassing many Android phones with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chips.
The iPhone 16 handles everyday tasks and demanding games like Wuthering Waves with ease, remaining comfortable even during extended use. It comes in more vibrant color options, and while it also features Ceramic Shield, additional protection is recommended. Its smaller size makes it more pocket-friendly and easier to use than the wider Pro Max models.
The display, though lacking the 120Hz refresh rate of the Pro models, is still excellent with a sharp, vibrant OLED panel and punchy speakers that enhance media consumption. The main camera captures vibrant colors and performs well in low light, but the ultra-wide and selfie cameras can struggle with softness, possibly due to focusing issues that may be addressed in future updates.
iPhone 16e
Best Budget iPhone
Apple iPhone 16e
0The iPhone 16e is Apple's latest budget-friendly offering, featuring the potent A18 chip but with some notable trade-offs. Starting at $599, it's more expensive than its predecessor, the iPhone SE, which began at $429.
The iPhone 16e offers a modern design with a larger, sharper 6.1-inch OLED display, an aluminum frame, and Ceramic Shield glass. It also comes with a base storage of 128GB. However, it lacks features like MagSafe, wireless charging, mmWave 5G, UWB support, and a second rear camera, which are standard in other non-SE models since the iPhone 12.
If you're looking for a simple phone and want the latest iPhone, the iPhone 16e might suffice. But if the missing features are a dealbreaker and you're not sold on Apple Intelligence's AI capabilities, consider refurbished options like the iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 15, available on Amazon for under $500, which might offer better value.
OnePlus 13
Best iPhone Alternative
OnePlus 13
0The OnePlus 13 is a compelling alternative to the iPhone, offering excellent value at $899. It rivals the iPhone 16 Pro Max with its triple-camera setup, featuring a 50MP telephoto, 50MP main, and 50MP ultra-wide sensors, delivering high-quality photos and videos. The 32MP selfie camera is also exceptional.
The display is comparable to the iPhone's, boasting a 6.82-inch OLED panel with a 3168x1440 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate that can drop to 1Hz for power efficiency. The Snapdragon 8 Elite processor nearly matches the iPhone 16 Pro Max's performance, excelling in multi-core tasks and graphics tests, making it a gaming powerhouse. The 6,000mAh battery supports heavy use, with 80W wired and 50W wireless charging options.
The OnePlus 13's design is elegant, available in various stylish colorways, and includes an alert slider reminiscent of older iPhones. It also offers IP68 and IP69 water resistance, surpassing the iPhone 16 lineup. If you're open to alternatives, the OnePlus 13 is well worth considering.
Upcoming iPhones
In 2024, the iPhone 16 series brought significant improvements and performance enhancements. Apple also adjusted the prices of older models to make them more accessible. The introduction of the iPhone 16e aims to replace the budget-oriented iPhone SE. Leaked images suggest that the upcoming iPhone 17 lineup may include an iPhone Air.
What to Look for in an Apple iPhone
Despite the variety of models, the user experience remains consistent across the iPhone lineup, which is a key reason for its popularity. However, understanding the differences between models can help you find the best fit. Here are key factors to consider when choosing an iPhone in 2025:
Phone Size
Size is crucial when selecting an iPhone. For one-handed use, smaller models like the iPhone 16 or iPhone 14 are ideal. If you prefer larger screens, the iPhone 16 Plus or iPhone 16 Pro Max might be better suited to your needs.
Storage Capacity
Consider your storage needs. If you plan to store many high-resolution photos, the iPhone 16 Pro Max with 1TB is a great choice. Other models start at 128GB, suitable for casual use.
Price
The iPhone range spans from the budget-friendly iPhone 16e at $599 to the top-tier iPhone 16 Pro Max (1TB) at $1,599. Regardless of the model, you'll receive the latest iOS updates for five to six years, ensuring a consistent software experience.
Ultimately, the best iPhone for you depends on your usage. The iPhone 16 Pro stands out as the most versatile option, offering a fast processor, excellent camera system, appealing colors, and various storage options at a competitive price.
