Joseph Kosinski, acclaimed director of Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, is reportedly set to helm a new Miami Vice film for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Nightcrawler writer-director Dan Gilroy is tasked with penning the script, building upon an initial draft by Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy, who has recently contributed to multiple episodes of the Star Wars series Andor—created by his brother Tony—is bringing his unique storytelling prowess to this project.

Miami Vice, the iconic NBC police series, was originally created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann. Airing from 1984 to 1989, the show featured Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. It is celebrated for revolutionizing television with its distinctive style and sound, setting new standards for visual and auditory aesthetics in the medium.

The series was previously adapted into a film in 2006 by Michael Mann, with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell leading the cast.
