IDW Publishing has taken a bold and expansive approach to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) franchise, marking 2024 with significant milestones such as the relaunch of the flagship TMNT comic series under the pen of Jason Aaron, the sequel to the acclaimed TMNT: The Last Ronin, and an exciting crossover event with TMNT x Naruto. As we move into 2025, the main TMNT series introduces a new regular artist and a fresh narrative arc where the four Turtles, Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo, reunite in New York City, albeit not on the best of terms.

During IGN Fan Fest 2025, we had the opportunity to delve deeper into the future of these series with Jason Aaron and Caleb Goellner, the writer behind TMNT x Naruto. We explored the evolution of their stories, the overarching mission for the TMNT line, and the prospects of reconciliation among the Turtles.

The Mission Statement of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

IDW has been prolific with the TMNT franchise, launching multiple series in quick succession. The relaunch of the flagship series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1, was a resounding success, selling around 300,000 copies and ranking among the top-selling comics of 2024. Jason Aaron's vision for the series is deeply rooted in the original Mirage Studios comics by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.

"For me, on this book, the guiding principle was just looking back at that original series, the original Mirage Studios book," Aaron shared with IGN. "Last year marked the 40th anniversary of that series, which introduced the Turtles. That was my first encounter with these characters, before the films or cartoons. I wanted to recapture the grittiness and action-packed essence of those early black and white comics, where the Turtles fought ninjas in New York City alleyways."

Aaron aims to blend this nostalgic feel with new narratives that reflect the Turtles' growth and current challenges. "The goal is to tell a story that feels both new and forward-moving, considering all the Turtles have been through in the previous 150 issues of the IDW series. They've matured and are at a crossroads, trying to rediscover their unity and heroism to face new threats."

The success of TMNT #1 underscores a trend where audiences are eager for reboots and streamlined narratives of major franchises, a phenomenon also seen in Marvel's Ultimate Universe, DC's Absolute line, and Skybound's Energon Universe. Aaron acknowledges this demand but focuses on storytelling that excites him personally. "I'm just trying to make up stories that get me excited. When I got the call about doing Turtles, I was thrilled and knew I could do something special."

Aaron has enjoyed collaborating with a diverse range of artists in the first six issues, leading to a dynamic and engaging series. "The excitement I felt for this project seems to have resonated with readers, whether they're long-time Turtles fans or newcomers."

A TMNT Family Reunion

Aaron's narrative began with the Turtles dispersed around the world, each facing unique challenges. By the end of the initial storyline, they reunite in New York City, setting the stage for new conflicts and dynamics. "It was fun writing those first issues, seeing each brother in different global situations," Aaron reflects. "But the real excitement comes when they're together, navigating their strained relationships."

With the introduction of Juan Ferreyra as the new regular artist starting from issue #6, the series gains a consistent visual style that complements the gritty urban setting. "Juan's work is incredible, perfectly suited for this kind of Turtle story. He's making the book his own in a significant way."

Merging the TMNT and Naruto Universes

The TMNT x Naruto crossover series, crafted by Caleb Goellner and artist Hendry Prasetya, presents a unique blend of these iconic franchises. The series introduces a world where the Turtles and the Uzumaki Clan coexist, with their first encounters sparking intriguing interactions.

Goellner credits Prasetya for the Turtles' redesign, which seamlessly integrates them into the Naruto universe. "I had minimal suggestions, but what they came back with was unreal. I hope these designs get turned into toys."

The crossover also explores character dynamics, with Goellner enjoying the interactions between various heroes. "I like seeing Kakashi with anyone, especially now that I'm a dad. He's my viewpoint into the Naruto world. But all the pairings are fun."

Looking ahead, Goellner teases the involvement of a major TMNT villain, a specific request from Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto. "He wanted a certain villain to appear and for the Naruto characters to fight them. I'm excited to see how fans react to this."

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7 was released on February 26, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto #3 is set to hit stores on March 26. Additionally, IGN offers an exclusive preview of the final chapter of TMNT: The Last Ronin II - Re-Evolution.
