"Take-Two CEO on GTA 6 Delay: 'Painful but Necessary for Creative Vision'"
Back in February, I posed a question to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick regarding his confidence in meeting the then-fall 2025 release window for *GTA 6*. His response? He expressed strong optimism, stating he felt "really good about it." Fast forward three months, and as expected, *GTA 6* was pushed back to May 26, 2026.
So, what shifted in those short months? That’s what I wanted to know, leading to a follow-up interview timed alongside Take-Two’s recent financial results. According to Zelnick, as the project neared completion, the necessity for additional refinement became increasingly apparent.
“As we near the final stages of a title aiming for perfection, the demand—or lack thereof—for further polish becomes evident,” Zelnick explained. “In this instance, we believed a modest extension of time would ensure Rockstar Games could realize its creative ambitions unencumbered. Naturally, I backed this decision.”Although delaying GTA 6 beyond Take-Two’s current fiscal year impacts short-term earnings, Zelnick remains optimistic about the upcoming lineup, highlighting titles such as Gearbox’s Borderlands 4, Hangar 13’s Mafia: The Old Country, and new entries in the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series.
“I’m quite positive about how Fiscal 2026 is shaping up,” he stated. “While delays are undoubtedly frustrating, the priority must always be supporting our teams as they strive for excellence.”

The natural follow-up question remains: just how confident is Zelnick that Rockstar will deliver by May 26, 2026? This time, his tone carried even greater assurance.
“I believe historically, when we establish a concrete release date, we’ve consistently met it,” he noted. While leaving room for the unexpected, this statement strongly implies that GTA 6 is unlikely to slip again.
