SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Emio: The Smiling Man’, ‘Gundam Breaker 4’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and Sales

Hello, dear readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for August 29th, 2024. Today's column is packed with a slew of exciting new releases, which will be our main focus, as is typical for Thursdays. We also have a substantial list of new sales to explore, rounding out our coverage for the day. While we can't have a Nintendo Direct every day, the gaming world keeps spinning with plenty to discuss. Let's dive into the games!

Select New Releases

Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99)

After a long hiatus, Famicom Detective Club returns with a new installment that stays true to its roots. This latest entry offers a fresh mystery to unravel, presented in a style reminiscent of the recent Switch remakes. Are you ready to crack the case of the latest serial murder? Stay tuned for my upcoming review.

Gundam Breaker 4 ($59.99)

Mikhail has penned an in-depth review of this title, which you can find for a comprehensive look at the gameplay and performance on the Switch. In short, you'll be constructing and battling with Gunplas. While the Switch version might not match the performance of other platforms, it's still a solid choice if it's your only option. Don't miss Mikhail's thorough review—it's well worth the read.

Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn ($19.99)

Tengo Project continues its successful streak with this reimagining of an 8-bit classic. Following in the footsteps of Wild Guns Reloaded, The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors, and Pocky & Rocky Reshrined, Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn offers a unique take on the original. Action-platformer enthusiasts craving a classic vibe should keep an eye out for my review next week.

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

This sequel to Valfaris shifts genres to a 2.5D side-scrolling shoot 'em up, and it's a solid entry despite the surprise shift. While some fans might be taken aback, those who embrace the change will find plenty to enjoy. Look out for my upcoming review to learn more.

Nour: Play With Your Food ($9.99)

This game is a bit of a mystery, but it's visually appealing with its food-themed imagery. Whether you're snapping photos, uncovering secrets, or just playing around, it's an intriguing concept. I might just send Mikhail to delve deeper into this one—it seems right up his alley.

Monster Jam Showdown ($49.99)

If monster trucks rev your engine, then Monster Jam Showdown might be for you. With multiplayer support and a variety of modes, it offers plenty to explore. Though it's received mixed reviews on other platforms, it's a solid choice for dedicated monster truck fans on the Switch.

WitchSpring R ($39.99)

This could be a remake of the original WitchSpring, though I'm not entirely certain. It's always been a mobile-friendly alternative to Atelier, and while the price point is nearing that of an Atelier game, it still offers a polished experience for fans of the series.

Depths of Sanity ($19.99)

This undersea exploration game dives into fantastical horror as you search for your missing crew. Expect an interconnected underwater world filled with dangers and mysteries to solve, along with combat. It's well-regarded by fans of exploratory action games on other platforms and should find a similar audience on the Switch.

Voltaire: The Vegan Vampire ($19.99)

Voltaire, a rebellious young vampire, opts for a vegan lifestyle, much to his father's dismay. This leads to a mix of farming and action as you fend off his father's attempts to thwart you. Though I'm feeling a bit fatigued with this genre, it might be the perfect pick for those more enthusiastic about farming and action.

Marble Abduction! Patti Hattu ($11.79)

This marble roller game offers seventy stages and eighty marbles to collect, along with secret items and special challenges. If you enjoy racing marbles as fast as you can without flying off the track, this game delivers that classic thrill.

Leo: The Firefighter Cat ($24.99)

Unlike most firefighting games on the Switch, Leo: The Firefighter Cat targets a younger audience with its playful approach. With twenty missions, it covers the essentials in a way that's engaging for kids interested in firefighting.

Gori: Cuddly Carnage ($21.99)

On the other end of the feline gaming spectrum, Gori: Cuddly Carnage features a hoverboarding cat that gleefully slices through enemies. While the game itself is enjoyable, the Switch version suffers from technical issues that might detract from the experience, especially if you're sensitive to framerate drops.

Arcade Archives Finalizer Super Transformation ($7.99)

Hamster's Arcade Archives series often unearths forgotten gems, and this 1985 Konami vertical shooter is no exception. With a transforming robot hero and a post-Xevious charm, it's a nostalgic trip for fans of classic shooters.

EGGCONSOLE Xanadu Scenario II PC-8801mkIISR ($6.49)

As an early expansion pack, Xanadu Scenario II adds a new underworld to explore. It's challenging and features the debut of legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro. A must-have for fans of gaming history.

The Backrooms: Survival ($10.99)

Combining horror, survival, and roguelite elements, The Backrooms: Survival is best enjoyed with up to ten players online. Solo play caters to a specific taste due to its repetitive nature, but it's well-received on PC.

Can of Wormholes ($19.99)

In this clever puzzle game, you play as a sentient tin can tackling a variety of worm-related challenges. With one hundred hand-crafted puzzles and fresh ideas throughout, it's a standout for puzzle enthusiasts.

Ninja I & II ($9.99)

These modern NES games, playable through emulation, offer a ninja-themed twist on Wario Ware-style microgames. Competitive and fun, they're a unique addition to the NES library.

Dice Make 10! ($3.99)

This unassuming title packs a punch with its Tetris-style and wood block puzzle modes. Your goal is to arrange dice to make rows or columns that sum to ten or multiples thereof, creating a satisfying and addictive gameplay loop.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Celebrate the 30th anniversary of The King of Fighters with a sale on every title in the series on Arcade Archives. It's the perfect time to complete your collection. Additionally, the Pixel Game Maker Series games are at their lowest prices yet. While there aren't many other standout deals, you might find some hidden gems among the indie titles. Be sure to check them out.
