Switch 2 Priced Competitively Among Nintendo Consoles at Launch
The announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2's $450 USD price tag certainly raised eyebrows, marking a significant increase from the prices we've seen with previous Nintendo consoles. Given the rise in production costs and economic factors such as tariffs, analysts had forecasted the Switch 2 to be priced at around $400 USD, which makes the actual price somewhat anticipated. However, the real surprise came with the pricing of Switch 2 games, setting a new benchmark at $70 USD, with some titles like Mario Kart World reaching up to $80 USD. When you factor in the cost of accessories needed for the full Switch 2 experience, the total investment becomes quite substantial.
But how does the Switch 2's price compare to previous Nintendo consoles when adjusted for inflation? And how does it stack up against other gaming consoles? The comparisons might just surprise you.
Nintendo Switch 2 Price Vs Previous Nintendo Consoles
NES
The NES, launched in 1985 at $179 USD, seems like a steal today. However, adjusted for inflation, it would cost a whopping $523 USD in 2025.
SNES
The SNES hit the market in 1991 for $199 USD. With inflation, that price jumps to $460 USD in today's terms.
Nintendo 64
The Nintendo 64, released in 1996 for $199 USD, would now cost $400 USD after adjusting for inflation.
Nintendo GameCube
The GameCube, which launched in 2001 for $199 USD, translates to $359 USD in 2025 dollars. Its games will be accessible on the Switch 2 through the Nintendo Switch Online's classic library.
Wii
The innovative Wii, released in 2006 for $249 USD, would be priced at about $394 USD in 2025.
Wii U
The less successful Wii U was launched in 2012 for $299 USD, which equates to $415 USD today, closely aligning with the Switch 2's price point.
Nintendo Switch
The highly successful Nintendo Switch, released in 2017 for $299 USD, would cost $387 USD in today's dollars, still undercutting the Switch 2's price when it launches on June 5.
So, even though the original NES is the most expensive console Nintendo has ever launched when adjusted for inflation, it doesn't make the Switch 2's price any more palatable.

While the Switch 2's price was somewhat expected by analysts, the game pricing caused a stir. Titles like Mario Kart World are set at $80 USD, while others such as Donkey Kong Bananza are priced at $70 USD (or $65 digitally). Comparing these to the earliest NES cartridges is tricky due to the wide variance in pricing back then. For instance, an NES game in the early 90s could cost up to $45 USD, which would be $130 USD in 2025, while others sold for as low as $34 USD, or $98 USD adjusted for inflation. Yet, there's a growing sentiment that game prices could see further increases.
It's clear the Switch 2 lands on the higher end of Nintendo's pricing spectrum, surpassed only by the NES and SNES. Economic factors seem to be driving this increase, evidenced by Nintendo's announcement of a cheaper, region-locked Switch 2 for Japan, priced at 49,980 JPY, or about $340 USD.
How Switch 2's Price Compares to Other Consoles
When we analyze the Switch 2's price against other consoles, it's interesting to see how it compares.
PlayStation 2
The PlayStation 2, launched in 2000 for $299 USD, would cost a staggering $565 USD in 2025 after adjusting for inflation.
Xbox 360
The Xbox 360, released in 2005 for $299 USD, would be about $500 USD today.
