Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster’s Development Time Was Longer Than Expected

Developers Wanted To Honor The Originals

The Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster required a dedicated 5-year development period to ensure a high-quality remaster that honors the original games. In an insightful interview with Dengeki Online on March 4, 2025, the developers behind Suikoden I & II HD Remaster (Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR) shared the intricacies of crafting this faithful remaster.

Initially announced in 2022 with a planned release in 2023, the project faced delays and is now slated for release this year. Suikoden Gensho series IP and Game Director Takahiro Sakiyama explained that towards the end of development, the team's ongoing debugging efforts necessitated a thorough review, leading to the postponement of the original release date.

Tatsuya Ogushi, Game Director for Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR, elaborated, "Our approach was cautious and thorough. After consultations with Sakiyama, it became evident that numerous aspects required further attention to meet our quality standards."

Reviving the Series

The remaster is more than just a revival of classic games; it represents the initial step in rejuvenating the entire Suikoden franchise. Suikoden series Producer Rui Naito outlined the vision for the franchise's future and the importance of setting a strong foundation.

Naito emphasized to the production team, "This remaster is crucial as the first step in reviving the Suikoden IP. We must ensure it's done right, as it sets the tone for the series' future. My directive to Sakiyama and the team was to 'make it solid' because a substandard launch could halt our efforts to revive the series."

Gensou Suikoden Live Revealed New Anime, Mobile Game, and More

During the recent Gensou Suikoden Live event on March 4, 2025, Konami unveiled exciting new projects for the Suikoden franchise. Naito described the event as the second phase in the IP's revival, though he was uncertain about the number of steps required to fully restore the franchise's prominence.

He stated, "We've been diligently refining Suikoden I & II HDR and are deeply committed to the upcoming mobile game, Suikoden STAR LEAP, and the Suikoden II anime. Once these projects are successfully launched, we can consider our next moves."

Konami also announced "Suikoden: The Anime," an adaptation of the story from Suikoden 2, marking the first project for Konami Animation. Additionally, a mobile game titled "Genso Suikoden: STAR LEAP" was revealed. Both projects have released teaser trailers, but specific release dates are yet to be announced.

Konami is actively working on several other initiatives to bring the Suikoden franchise back into the spotlight.
